Martin great write up, I going to have to do this too.

do you have the P# for the CV joints you used, is it a Ford P#?

      Cheers,

      Mark.

Thanks, i dont have the part numbers mark, the place i took it to rang their suppliers telling them they were for an audi quattro. The guy on the phone must be a cv joint geek because he knew straight away that a ford part fitted.
They were given to me in an unmarked box so i dont have any numbers.

        Heres their site...http://www.autopropuk.co.uk/
They will be able to sort you out.
They weren't exactly cheap though, £55+ vat each

I didn't try the porsche part that ben mentioned in the first post, maybe gsf could get them cheaper.

Forgot my camera the day i did this at work so had to use my phone..lol, quality aren't they.

Overhauled my prop today, got the C.V. joints from the same place as Martin, and the centre bearing from ECP too. No real problems doing it.

One thing that was different on my prop compared to Martins is the universal joint yokes have the UJ crimped into place, instead of fixed in with circlips.

This made it a little harder to get the bolt out to split the prop and change the centre bearing........managed to get a spanner in there to get it out.

Thanks again for the write up, it made life a lot easier .

you guys are lucky, on my urS4, there was no direct replacement for the bearing, so i had to remove the old bracket and weld it onto the new bearing assembly. my bearing is from a 1995 325i auto bimmer.

regarding the joints, i was unable to locate the rubber boot and golden part in the pic martinjs posted. in the united states i can only get the GKN-made porsche fitment CV joint with part# 92333203200. Because I couldn't find a replacement rubber boot, i didn't take the chance of not being able to drive my car. oddly enough all my noises went away just by removing the driveshaft and reinstalling it. i'm thinking it was more of an alignment issue for me, as all my joints had fresh looking grease.

can you guys provide a source for the gold piece and rubber boot?

                  Excellent how-to.
I did the same thing 2 weeks ago. Separating the U-joints from the shaft can be a pain in the @ss.
A note: The rs2 U-joints bearings (4 pieces) are locked by 4 notches that er pressed in the U-joint, instead of the circlips that the s2 has.
I couldn't get them apart.... decently.

                  cheers

Crimped type joints are supposed to be removed/replaced. But with a bit of time and effort they can be removed for replacement. And a centre punch used to re-crimp the caps in

Sorted mark, Did you use any special procedure to re-align the prop.
I get a slight vibration at very low speeds (10mph). Just needs aligning properly.
@spiralsmurf, you can use the old 'covers' from your cv joints, just tap them off. I had to buy a new one because of an air chisel incident at the garage meet a few weeks ago (put a hole in it whilst changing rear diff)

                        Martin,

no I just used line of sight and used the original spacer washers and put them back in line with the marks on the underbody where they had been mounted originally, to be honest mine must have been well out of line for ages anyway as the rubber of the old centre bearing had sagged/deformed and the middle of the prop was at least 10-15mm lower than it should be.
Initially I think new centre bearing was a little tight, as it whined a little for a about 800 yards and then went quiet, then took it for a long test drive and it all seems ok now, with NO vibration.

Well i measured the old and new bearing at work to distinguish if the same size washers will make the prop sit at the same level but found a difference of 2mm (prop will sit higher)
I did use the original washers at first but had more vibration. So now ive using 2mm thinner washers which got rid of some vibration.
I reckon the hight is now right, but the left to right positioning is a bit out.
Just a case of adjusting either way a tad till its ok.

This pic shows how much the weight of the prop had distorted the rubber in the old centre bearing and put the bearing off centre.

About to refurb the prop - had to chase up parts inc. the infamous ford scorpio cv joints - got the pair complete for 60quid including shipping:

Thats a great price, and that place is only a couple of miles down the road from my work, didnt know about them. Did you get new covers for the joints with them or will you be using your old ones?
