Here it is then. silver s2 with 20k on the clock, maybe 3 owners, mechanically sound (i think) just needs a little body work. I think its got all the toys apart from leather. In your "expert" opinions what would that be worth??

Dont break my heart peeps ive always loved this car and im going to buy it, good idea, right??
if it's had 3 owners and needs some work on the body then are you sure you don't mean "200k on the clock"??

      200k

The story goes a chap bought this car almost brand new from a car supermarket at the time. It was his weekend car so didnt see much action, I know, i own a vw g60 and its gets nothing but the best. since then he had a little bump and had a dispute with the insurance, the latter not agreeing to pay him enough. So hes had it sitting there for the last 5 or so years.

And guess what i got through to this bloke eventually and got the keys to start it and.....prrrrrrrr it makes the most beautiful sound.

Like i said needs a bumper and elipsoid lights and maybe a few other bits. Oh and a damn good valet.

If it has sat for 5 yrs then you'll be needing 4 tyres for starters and I hope he didn't start it in 5yr old fuel (yuck)... Don't be surprised if hydraulics / PAS are playing up with it sitting so long. If it needs a bumper, paint and ellipsoids as well... The brakes may well require attention too - sticky calipers/handbrake...

Assuming you are taking a punt on this with no MOT or any real clue about what might be wrong with it - £2500 - could be worth LOADS more of course when made ship shape and is taxed, MOTd etc - but right now - its a bit of a lottery. If the guy wants more then you'll have to give it a proper inspection to tot up how much it will cost to at least get street legal again.

ive got a pic as it stands ill try and get it up, and this blokes said to make him a sensible offer, its original apart from new alloys and upgraded brakes, apart from that totally original. Original is where i thought the money was, but from what ive seen its the modded 1s that go for good money.

Any ideas what a good offer would be?

            Look at it this way...

            4 x tyres = £400 ish

bumper 2nd hand, painted = £300 ish (may do better if you are lucky sourcing cheaper)

            ellipsoids 2nd hand = £200

            front discs & pads = £150

            rear discs & pads = £100

MOT = £50 (as good as)

Thats a minimum spend of £1200 assuming nothing else is wrong with it to get it MOT'd.

Didnt think 5 year old fuel was not a good idea

yeh i expect to get a few other minor issues, lets keep quiet about those shall we But this is the big question, is it worth it?
What is the true value of an orginal?

It sounds like it could be a lot of work if it's been sat around for so long. Things degrade over time as well as mileage. It will need a good service, cambelt and so on too. As well as the parts and paint to repair any damage.
I usually steer clear of low milage cars, for the reasons described above.

I've taken a punt at it - £2500 - others will have different opinions... To be certain you aren't taking on a nightmare then get it properly inspected by AA/RAC to get an independent list of what needs replaced for roadworthiness. Then subtract that from book value of one in 'good' condition to get a more objective number... Doubtless the guy will argue that such low mileage is worth something more - that is questionable with the car being laid up for so long. When the car is tiptop, its low mileage will enhance value, but I would argue right now it adds nothing.

Oh yeah it'll need a complete brake fluid refresh and coolant renewed as well as an oil change... Cheap if doing it yourself - not so if paying a garage.

The lads make a good point about the belts - despite low miles they need replaced too... Factor in another wadge of cash there dependent on who is doing the work.

You could add rear calipers to that list, while you're at it.

I can help you with a front bumper if you need one, see my thread.

Sounds like a nice car but as mentioned its going to need a few things doing to it first.
