It may also need a battery lol, It shouldn't really scare you, any car thats been left idle for that amount of time would require these kinds of things. A lot goes to how it was stored, inside or outside on a grass patch, mine was idle for 2 years before i got my hand on it, and needed most of the above to put it right. Mine goes for its nct tomorrow.. eek..lol

Glass half empty
Please don't take offense, but the S2 is not the car for the 'average joe' unfortunately - this is proven by their currently low values - unless you are an average joe with deep pockets or have friends and family who can keep them on the road without breaking the bank... then for concerns about blood pressure and/or hair loss you are best staying well clear.
Glass Half full
Even if it wound up costing you £2500 to get on the road, assuming you spent less that £2500 for it - you could have a real nice car that needs little attention for a good while for very decent money. Bushes and dampers would be the next thing of concern due to pure age but thats not horrendous money if you shop around for parts and trusted garages.Paul Nugent

Have a read of the thread about my car....
linky
It was laid up for over 6 years and after charging the battery it started first time....
I put it back on the road for about £2K, but that included doing the full Porsche brake upgrade, a set of 18" Avus wheels & a brand new set of tyres etc etc....
The actual bill from my Mechanic was £660.00 which included all new belts, MOT, complete fluids and service....
So dont be to put off by what the guys are saying.... It's not ALWAYS as bad as they say!!!
BUT BE AWARE AUDI'S DON'T COME CHEAP...... BUT QUALITY NEVER DOES!!!
IMO The S2 is one of the last PROPER AUDI's..... & Will in time become collectable!! But don't buy it as an investment... Buy it to enjoy!!!
ALL cars cost money... If you can make a profit its a bonus!! But dont go looking for a profit!!
It's fool's gold IMO....Comment

Lee's right. All cars cost money, you could spend similar amounts (and possibly more) just keeping a sh*tbox on the road. At least the S2 is worth spending the dollar on though.
The quattro, S2 and RS2 are the only Audi's that really do it for me and it's almost fun spending money on them, seeing and feeling the improvement.
I bought a 'cheap' avant, spent a bit on curing the main ill's, though it needed more, sold it reflecting this to the first person to come and see it. He did much the same as me (and more!) before selling it on again. Now it's a pretty sorted example by all accounts.
It's part of the ownership experience for me, though it's ultimately definitely worth seeking out a sorted example of such a car if you can.Comment

IMO For what its worth - I would not touch a tuned one if its not a members car.... if like me you are not a Mechanic - You just dont know what someone has done to it... & what problems you may find afterwards!!
If its one from here then that will be a different kettle of fish.... But I would still be careful...
It depends on what you want? I want my car to be as near orginal as possable but with bringing it up to 21st century standards like brakes etc.... I have kept all the orginal parts so that I can put it back if I wanted to....
Look at the MK1 Escort on fleabay it fetched £11,500.00 but I bet you if it had been messed with 15 years ago and had a Lotus engine fitted etc it would not be worth a quarter of the price!!!
I also think that some of the issues raised on this thread about prices also reflect the fact that people like me don't want a modified car as all I see is trouble - I know its not what you guys think but I am a layman when it comes to cars and mods just sound like trouble & how do you get them fixed if your not a mechanic....
I agree with most things said on this thread from both sides and if people can get more money by scapping a good runner then it's up to them... I may not like it but at the end of the day it's their money and not mine!!
The more that this happens the better for people like me who are enjoying thier car & looking forward in the next 10 years etc and it helps ease the parts supply especially with VAG dropping so many items etc...
A car is a car it gets you from A-B it just depends on how you want to get there and how much you wanna spend on it...
Take my RS6 they guy who wought it from VAG paid over £60K in 8 months he lost over £20K & I bought it for £43K & have just sold it for £16K - 5 years later... so my 5 years cost me £5.4K a year.... The 1st owners costs were about £30K per year....
Its all relative... And depends on what you want to spend YOUR HARD EARNED CASH on!!Comment

Its a fine line. A totally standard s2 can have plenty of problems, even simply due to design!
Take the intercooler o ring seal, its crap and causes boost leaks. Do the correct mod and its sorted for good!
Personally i wouldnt touch a standard non forum car with a bargepole... I did it before and am still paying for the bits on it that have been sold by james breaking it!!!!Comment

It is a fine line & personal choice.... I have never had a problem with any of the so called "crap" issues you mention and my car is a 1993 version!!Its a fine line. A totally standard s2 can have plenty of problems, even simply due to design!
Take the intercooler o ring seal, its crap and causes boost leaks. Do the correct mod and its sorted for good!
Personally i wouldnt touch a standard non forum car with a bargepole... I did it before and am still paying for the bits on it that have been sold by james breaking it!!!!
BUT that said I did say do the upgrades like the brakes etc that bring the car more upto date and its sensible to improve know faults when the problems happen or even better before they happen.... I totally agree DEST but these are MINOR mods which would not scare me away as being a novice to mechanics!!
If someone wants a fully modified car thats upto them but there is no way you guys who have done all these are EVER gonna get your money back for the full costs involved.... Shurely you are aware of this when you start out doing them!!!
This is not a critisum just an honest opionion!!! I think that some of the cars on here are absolutly mind blowing and a credit to the guys who have worked on them - but its not for me or my current car....
If I was gonna do a super doppa 500+ BPH car I would buy a sound wrecker and start from there!!!Comment

id rather buy a cheap s2 and get to know the car myself by working on it than spending thousands on a car that is builtComment

s2 or not s2. TBH i wanted something more powerful than what i currently own. There a sh*t load of pros and cons. Maintenance isnt a prob if any1s owned a corrado they would know, old cars need that tlc. BTW if some1s interested in my g60-
