Thanks S2 people, Nice 944, i think the interior is a bit loud for me though!

dangeropus in the wet? only if you havent been in a RWD before, i have owned 100s of quick cars, and comparing to most RWD cars its the safest.
I have had it out of shape at over 100mph many times, not even a worry- there is no snatchback like an M3 or 911. It does what you tell it.
I am deep in my S2 build now and i think this will just be put back as it was and used this summer, the conversion can wait.

There are i5 20v conversions, only 3 i know of but a lot of work and cost tbh, and why bother as the 944 engine will do the same power at the early tuning stages as the i5 - 280-290 on a chip, 330 with a K26/8 and WG, 420 available with bolt on's some cars with 600hp. the 944 engine is lighter and sits behind the front wheels - i think fitting the i5 is going backwards in handling terms. *maybe worth it for sound.

The 968 cs (same chassis as this) is rated as one of the best handleing production cars of all time.

Love it. Awesome car, and a great thread!

I have always hankered after one of these and have yet to scratch the itch. If I did it would be with one like that...

          Cheers,

Wow. Great car, great story, great project, great thread. Thanks for sharing

I have always hankered after a 968CS but the 944 is a far more realistic prospect.
Love what you've done with it, and I have to say i agree there a lot to be said for reliable performance.... looking forward to seeing the car in the flesh one day... and if i see it tearing about in MK then i know who it is

Keep us up to date with it

              Great thread!!
I have to be honest and say that I've never really liked the 944. However after reading this I've changed my mind completely and I now want one. Super looking car! I look forward to further updates.

Wow. Thanks for taking the time to tell the story of your 944. That hasturned out to be a seriously nice car, especially for a 'poor man's Porsche'.

I looked at a 952 many years ago. It looked great inside and out, but was pretty rough underneath, so I left it alone. I didn't even bother driving it.
I would still love a go in one though.

Brilliant car, possibly even better write up. Comedy in places. Never has a car suited a set a wheels more.

I have been away from here due to a lack of Audis. (just an 80 avant tdi)

But thanks, and yes there are a few updates.
It has been my daily car so no big tuning as yet.

                        Aside from that
The Bosch pump went noisy, now replaced with this Walbro 255.

I have changed the boost controll to this type-
                        http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TURBO-MANU...item33590834bd

Also recently I have had the intercooler modified with a larger end tank, and discoverd that my turbo has been mildly re-worked.
And as im running 1.5 bar, 55lb siemens injectors seemed as good thing to do,I havent noticed a difference in MPG either.

I would like to get it on the rollers soon, as it is at the stage where the AFM will be holding it back, JMG say around 340 hp is the AFMs flow limit with just over 400ft lb.

After 2 years I replaced the non scripted drivers handle with the correct matching one.

I also realised my spare wheel does not fit over the brakes, so i got a 993 magnesium one.

And a period genuine badge has to be better than a sticker right?

you can't buy a Ruf badge, not even from Ruf unless you have a chassis number - so that was a rare find, pleased with that.

Right, first the small things, that silly tail pipe is now 2" shorter - shame it took a year to get round to it as it looked gash. Looks factory now-

The underside, had to mostly be removed..

To remove the exhaust, gearbox, rear beam and torque tube.

This is beacuse the gearing is too short for big roads/drives, OK for short tearups but not real driving..
(lots of lifting as traffic in the way hence lifting a lot, but you see gears are short)

                        So I bought this-

A G31 Dogleg (from 924 turbo/ Carrera GT) with LSD, with all conversion parts collected to fit my 944.
It is a completly different design to the 944, and sits infront of the wheels rather than behind. They were also used in the Ford RS1700 rally cars.

The 924 runs a speedo cable off the front wheel, but my later 944 has an electronic one off the box, so this is needed to convert the signal.

I swapped my larger torsion bars, alloy rear arms, and brembo set up onto the G31/924 early torsion tube which has the g/box mounts.

It is now done and the motorway cruising is great, but most of all it stays in the power band a bit longer, a bit more laggy though.
This box is very strong and will cope much more power, where the old onew was on the limit, more power comming soon.

                        Almost forgot...

The flap type AFM can be easily replaced by a MAP sensor with a little bit of hacking of the ECU, so I would not worry too much about it.

That is interesting, the only thing i have found so far are MAF kits with a a section of loom and a box that converts the signal.
I had thought to lose the AFM and use diffenent management, but if you can make it run a map sensor instead i (and many others) would be interested as the MAF kits are silly money.
I would just change the exhaust/turbo/cooler and injectors to get the power required.
I think putting a K27 front on my k26/8 would be next.

Yeah I am aware of the Scivision kits, and they are indeed silly money...

You can do standalone management as well, whatever floats your boat. That said, because the flap type AFM does not measure airmass (only airflow) it is a lot easier to replace with a MAP sensor than a car that has an air mass meter.

Thanks PRJ, i still need it done.

An update... a year and a half later.

The car sat around for a lot of that time, mostly because I needed to change the block.
It wasn't the cars fault to be fair, i fitted standard injectors (mine were fitted to a customers car) and i forgot.
I held it flat out in 5th gear, it leaned out, popped the head gasket and i tried to limp it home. It hydro locked (water sucked into bore) cracking the block..

                                Anyway -
First i will ad a picture to remind us about the previous drivel.
