Straw that broke the Camel's back springs to mind.
TG and Clarkson have been huge for years and something that big has a finite lifespan before egos get in the way or the format goes stale. The BBC are weak-stomached and cannot deal with characters nowadays and as such, they could not manage Clarkson; culminating in recent events.
TG hasn't done much new for a while; re-heating the same comedy routines and story lines and was becoming a caricature of its former self, albeint quite an amusing one to watch. With any luck, recent events will allow for a new format with fresh cast or crew, much the same as the old TG revolution of the mid-late 90s that made the names of VBH, Clarkson, Tiff, Steve Berry, Qnetin Wilson et al and as a teenager whose only snippet of car tv was TG, it was a very exciting time. To this day, a red 850R is still a very exciting car, following the Clarkson review piece in a fire-lit quarry.
We don't need any more consumer car shows, as proven by a lot of the dross on Freeview / Sky etc. that are light on content and tend to have wooden presenters trying to be as dynamic as the TG lads and failing. Miserably.
5th Gear does try to do the consumer bit but it's just not something that mixes well with sensationalist, scripted larking about and so it's changed channels a few times, more than likely due to the specialist viewer required to give 2 hoots about their subject matter and their attempts to be more mainstream not hitting the spot. They do try and steer a little away from the cars with guest challenges but they should stick to the the thing that Tiff, Plato and VBH do best, which is review cars better than any other show on TV. TG included.
As such, an entertainment show, like TG, with the cars as the extra cast members has a much broader appeal and I would have thought that there will be a few attempts to fill the void and make a fortune in the process. BBC have lost a lot of face over all of this and they will have to get the re-invention right, which I have no faith that they will. If a Blue Peter presenter tries to tell me about the latest hypercar while someone who is on CeeBeebies and a One Show presenter lark about in the background, I'm sure it'll be hilarious... for all the wrong reasons.
