    Thanks Kit.
I forgot to mention but there was oil under the cap when I removed it which is a good sign.

That is a good sign, means the head didn't suffer total starvation which is what happened with the one that crap it's pants on me.

I bought a B6 1,8t once that sounded like a tumble dryer full of rocks. Chain tensioner was blown out to the point that the chain had made a track and whipped a crack in the valve cover. Still ran though. New tensioner in and all was fine.

Not much has happened over Christmas. But I did take delivery of another engine. Thanks Rob.
It's much cleaner inside than mine.

So today I cleaned up the rocker cover and fitted a new gasket.
The spark plug holes were full of crud so they got a quick hoover before replacing the plugs.

I also removed the sump and cleaned out the pick up screen. Oil pump also removed, checked, cleaned and primed.

The bell housing was full of oil.
          It took some cleaning.

I need to order one of these as I can't find the seal and o ring separately.

I bought a replacement turbo. It's a refurbished original done by Delphi in Spain. Looks good and wasn't too expensive.

Are the crank seals OK. As they had both failed on my B5.

On the old engine they look like they are both leaking, well that's not completely accurate. Everything appears to be leaking . Now on the new engine, they both look good but the camshaft seal is leaking. The new engine recently had a new clutch and dmfw so I'm reluctant to remove if it's all good as I will need a new set of flywheel bolts and the spend is adding up. I have two seals already so might just go for it. Getting parts takes much longer than normal at the moment due to holidays and postal strikes. Stuff I ordered on the 2 December arrived today
The plan is (atm) to put the new engine in with minimum spend and rebuild the old engine at my leisure with new bearings and maybe forged rods. We will see

Glad to see you got a decent motor sorted in the end, I'd do both the crank seals now as they're cheap and really easy to get at currently, I certainly do the gearbox end one. Sod's law it'll start leaking, especially if the engine has been stood a while.

You are quite right Kit. I'm just being lazy. I have the seals so it's a no brainer

                    It's off.

New flywheel bolts ordered. They were under £10 delivered. There are two types and mine were the cheaper, short version. How often does that happen.
Now, got to think about how to remove the seal. Drill holes or use the lever tool. Ponder

I always change the rear seal by taking the complete alloy housing off and do the job on a bench, take's a bit longer but makes life a good deal easier, much less chance of ******ing up the new seal as well.

Well I just found out that the seal is part of the housing and can't be replaced separately. That's annoying. So just ordered one of those and now I'm on stop until it arrives. Annoying that I now also have to re seal the sump again. Sad face.

That's irritating, on older engines it's two piece and really quite easy to change, bloody cost cutting by Audi.

The older type two piece seal from I4/I5 fits plug&play on 1.8t

Have you got the part number? Handy to know

Two piece seal has been replaced by single piece so if you order a seal for your b3/b4 engine, you'll get single piece part. Seal ring is 85x105x11, EL342093 made by Elring for example. 7zap doesn't show part number for the frame, just lists it as discontinued, but I usually just take used frame form inline b3/b4 engine and fit new seal ring for all 1.8T builds I've done.
