That's a much better solution, still not a lot of fun on the floor but at least that's safe and you haven't got to work around the legs on the hoist.

Loose spark plugs is really common as people simply torque new ones up once and forget them, a couple of heat cycles later the crush washer has been squashed by a couple of thou and the plugs are slightly loose. I always torque plugs up once then back them off and re-torque twice, this compacts the washer and they tend to stay tight.

I got there in the end and now we can see what was causing the problem.

Glad you got in there in the end! That looks like pretty much like the ones I've dealt with previously, I expecting to see a bit more plastic and sealant in the sump itself, I guess most it got flushed out the with oil or sucked up into the strainer. I recon that engine will go again with a new cam chain tensioner and good clean out.

Not much plastic in there at all . I wonder where it went?
There is some aluminium paste at the bottom of the pan which doesn't bode well. I can still see thrust washers which is good. No lumps of metal either. Fingers crossed.

Hmmm, that alloy paste is a concern, I'd inspect all the camshaft bearing caps and carefully inspect the main bearings one at a time, you really need to try and workout where that came from.

If you haven't binned it yet I'd also filter the oil you dropped out through a clean rag in a funnel into a new container and see what sort of deposits are left behind.

Don't know if you have binned what is there but you could send a sample to one of these oil testing labs, should give you a clue on what is in there. https://www.theoillab.co.uk/product-...y/oil-testing/

That's also a good idea, would be interesting to see the results regardless.

Oil pump opened up and seems ok. Wear is minimal and well within tolerance.

                        The sump got a scrub.
You have to be careful with this stuff and not leave it too long on aluminium.

Next onto pick up. This is what came out with a pick.

                        Mainly plastic and sealant.
I'm going to soak that overnight.

You could also cut open the oil filter and see if there is any aluminium paste in there too.

                              Thanks fish, good idea.
I have come to the conclusion that this engine needs a rebuild. A very helpful member has stepped in with the offer of another engine that's sitting around in his workshop doing nothing. So the plan is to pull this engine and rebuild at my leasure. It's quite amazing how much cheaper parts are for these compared to ABY. Head gasket set is £60 for 4 pot and £150 5 pot
I will start pulling the engine today.

So the engine was the wrong code.
If anyone has a AJL of AEB engine knocking about, give me a shout
