Driveshaft arrived. Well wrapped and quality is excellent.


I wasted no time getting it fitted.


Torque up of inner cv to flange can be a challenge but this is the method I use.


Then we went for a spin.
She drives very nicely. Only issue is the front right brake is sticking.





She scrubs up well considering she is 22!

Now. I just thought I will check out the old driveshaft. I took it apart, cleaned it and inspected the circlip. I could fine nothing wrong at all. I put it back together and the joint is holding fine. Maybe I didn't hammer it home properly. Who knows but no I have a spare.


Not sure what to do with the old girl now. If anyone is interested, I could be tempted to let her go. Grin

Great progress Dave, you've taken a proper dog and transformed it into a nice car once more.

That bearing carrier bodge is pretty shocking, we come across stuff like this at work on a regular basis but that's not one I've encountered before!

Crow bar though a couple of wheel bolts is how I lock up hubs as well, works a treat.

Yes indeed, now the car's functional once more it's time to spend some time on the cosmetics. I reckon she'll polish up very well, the interiors are exceptionally nice on this model, I like the walnut trim and find the seats really comfortable.

I dare say you'll find a few minor niggles over the the first couple of 100 miles but that's the nature of projects like this, the main thing is the car is road worthy again which was no mean feat.

I think Charlie has gotten rid of his one so there just happens to be a good longitudinal 1.8T engine sat on a stand in my workshop and a 2.0L B3 quattro Saloon residing in my yard..

Have also made arrangements for that C4 shell to be removed on Monday so things are slowly happening at home finally.

It took 6 bar before the piston started to move.


And it's not surprising they were sticking.


By the time I've ordered new piston and seal, I could have had a new caliper. I've ordered a new pair. I'm changing them both as the other front won't be far behind. I will do new flexi pipes at the same time.

Calipers changed. Bled again and quick spin to test. Brakes feel a bit spongy so it will require another bleed. Otherwise all good.

The rear wiper is behaving very strangely. Stop start, stop start in stages.
I had a read online and apparently it's poor connectivity inside the motor.
Stripped it down.


After lots of soaking in penetration oil!

These torx screws hold the cover on.


And once inside you get to the contacts that need a clean.



There was quite a lot of green corrosion on the contacts. Cleaned up with acetone, some contact grease applied and reassembled.
Still not quite right. Humm.

Good call replacing the front calipers as a pair, that really is the correct way to do it on an older car and it's the way we do it at work if needs be, despite some protests from customers. Brakes are not an area of a car where one economises.

Those rear wiper motors can be PITA to repair, last time I I tried to fix one I gave up and changed it, I think it was under £40 from TPS. Though that was a couple of years ago now and no doubt it'll be more expensive or NLA...

I would Scotchbright the contact ring and use a diamond stone or wet and dry paper on the platinum contacts. Have you tried powering it directly to be sure it's not intermittent wiring? It needs a ground, a constant feed and a switched feed. The one on my coupe is playing up at the mo but works perfectly when powered directly, haven't worked out what's going on yet..
