Inner cv arrived this morning which is very good considering it came from Belgium. SKF quality is very good.
And fitted.
And the other side all done. Both shafts have been off with fresh grease and boots. Rust treated and painted with Bilt epoxy.
Just waiting for the brake pads and injectors then I can go for a spin.

Swapped the coolant bottle for a new Febi one. The old one was very rust stained and despite my efforts, I couldn't get it clean. The one from the tdi is very good but the bottom hose connection comes out at a different angle. Only £25 for the Febi one.
I replaced the coolant sensor at the back of the head at the same time.

Injectors re fitted and coolant system re bled. Run up to temp and confirmed the new coolant sensor is working, as is the heater fan. Smile.
Bled the steering and topped up the now nice clean GREEN mineral hydraulic oil.
But I've just noticed the radio is dead. I will check the fuse.
Cleaned up top covers and re fitted.
I'm looking for a single Bolero centre cap if anyone has one knocking about?
Still waiting for my front brake pads ordered on Tuesday. Angry face.

My brake pads seem to have been lost in the post. I've ordered another set.
While waiting, I checked the radio out. The main fuse was good but the one on the actual radio had blown.
Popped a new one in and we have some life.
Unfortunately the display appears to have bled out. Putting in the security code was a challenge without seeing what numbers you have but got there in the end and now it's working. Smile.
Also found I have a working multi changer.
Then I found some rust in the spare wheel well. That's getting cleaned out, treated and painted.
Also found this in the back whilst hoovering.

Not sure what this cap is from, it looks like the right size
I know what this is hiding under the bench though, brand new too..

I painted the spare wheel well with Bilt epoxy. It didn't look right mat black so I found this which is actually quite a good match to the original.
Only brushed on but no one will notice.

I popped to my local breakers yard this morning to see if I could scavenge any parts. Noticed this which is rather rare now.
I picked up quite a few good parts. A dip stick, cover for the pas reservoir, and a washer pump. Mine is working but leaking from the barrel bit at the bottom.
When I got home my brake pads had been delivered.
I wasted no time in getting them fitted.

Today was meant to first drive day. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out.
I started by checking my washer bottle. Leak fixed so happy about that but while I was there I noticed that the pas pipe was wet with oil. Traced it back to the reservoir where the join was leaking. Rather than mess about I have some new gates oil pipe so just replace that whole section. All sorted.
While the wheels were off I wanted to change the brake fluid. This was strange because what was coming out was green. I've never seen green brake fluid before. Anyone? Perhaps the last owner mixed up the pas fluid bottle with the brake fluid one? Who knows. Anyway, flushed it all out with new dot 4 fluid.
Next job was to replace the wheels and torque up the hub bolts. This all went to plan and it was lunchtime. After lunch I came out with the key itching to get her out for first drive. I started her up, into reverse and then it happened. …………
Absolutely nothing! No drive at all. OMG! Panic thoughts. What have I missed out when doing the clutch? Pedal felt normal, just no drive. Horrible thoughts were going through my mind. Have I got to pull the gearbox. Aaaah!
So, went in for a cup of tea and put my thinking head on (sometimes it works). Then it hit me. Whilst doing the nearside driveshaft the outer cv joint popped off the shaft. Never had this before so replace the clip again, put it together again and all was good. Had this joint come off again. I went back out to check and yes, it had. Being a Quattro, drive will just go to the shaft with the least resistance. Phew! Much less than clutch issues but still a pain. I'm scratching my head now as to why this joint keeps popping apart?
So, to take my mind off things and do something different, I decided to tackle this.
The corrosion is quite deep.
It's going to take quite a bit of sanding.
I'm doing the door handles as well.

£88 for a complete new shaft with joints is a bargain, that'll be that problem solved quickly and cleanly, no mucking about swapping greasy old joints!
It's great that one can still easily get quality good quality replacement parts for these cars, unlike S2's!
Anyway, your very nearly there with it by the looks of things, if you want to pop over for a cuppa on your first proper test drive, let me know and I'll fire up the kettle.1989 B3 2.0 3A 80 quattro... Budget 1.8T Project.
