  • 8E0 Rear Brake Upgrade

I got to looking at my rear discs and the inboard surfaces are truly shagged. MOT is on Friday so I went shopping to the local ECP for what I need in a hurry. Did my homework first and checked the part number on the family album.

It came up with 8E0 615 601B (now replaced by 8E0 615 601P) - which is weird cos the '8E' denotes MY03 and later A4 vehicles. I cross checked and sure enough the MY03 A4 calls up a 245x10 disc with 5x112 pattern.

I ordered them yesterday and EPC had them in today as promised for a whopping £17.50 each plus VAT - to my astonishment they look right. By comparison the rear discs on an MY97 A4 are very different looking. I will be fitting them tonight - then taking a long run tomorrow to bed them in with new pads.

None of this is terribly important until you see that the S4 model has a 300x22mm rear disc.

    The disc is 8E0 615 601K (and an 8E0 615 601R is also shown) @ £44.97 + VAT
    The carrier is 8E0 615 425B @ £71.53 + VAT
    The pads are 8E0 698 451C @ £47.43 + VAT

Because the hat height on the 245x10mm disc is the same as the S2 - then there is at least a decent chance the monster 300x22mm rear discs could fit.

Other questions are if th carrier will accomodate the UrS4/S6 or A8 rear caliper (needed for 22mm disc clearance) - or if the NeuS4 calipers are needed... At which point it would be cheaper to get custom carriers made.

Whatchya think - anybody else tried this option before I waste time on it ??????

BTDT as they say. Even thought the solid disc is the same the A4 has a wider rear track and rear hubs so none of it lines up. From memory the discs sit so far in that they catch the suspension.

I've not got any of the 300x22mm discs on the shelf at the moment though so I can't measure the hat height.

I was hoping the 300x22mm disc grew the other way... so the inner surface was approximately in the same plane as the inner surface of the 245x10mm disc - which I was vaguely hopeful of given that 8E numbered solid rear disc is supposedly good for the S2 application.

Do let me know if you get dimensional info on that 300x22mm disc. I'll keep looking here.

BTW - For the records - The EPC reference number on the 245x10 replacement discs is 104 441 180. Its a single ATE box containing two discs.

I've just ordered a pair of 300x22mm discs for stock.

I'll measure them when they arrive.

When doing the rear pad change, what is the correct tool to "wind" in the caliper piston. Can you do it with circlip pliers or is something else required? This is on my joblist to do and the only thing I am not sure about is the correct tool...

          Cheers,

There is a toolset you can get from Clarke for Girling rear calipers. Works a flipping treat - available from Machine Mart and other suitable outlets. Can't recall the price but it wasn't outlandish.

I'll photo my tool for you if you like - then you'll know what to look for.

You are a cheeky lad - cool !

Ordering them 'for stock' he says - if they fit there will soon be a global shortage in those discs - small exaggeration there

                  Hi!

Think these have a total height of 36mm. But lets wait until we can confirm this. So they should be ok with the usual jiggling of the carriers to align axially. The question is whether the carriers are in the correct position radially. If the carriers accept the alloy Lucas type then they should accept the other calipers.
There does seem to be a lot of commonality in spacings. So you will have to purchase a carrier to see! Unless of course one turns up unexpectedly and we can pull some basic measurements of it.

                    Paul,

Unfortunately I no longer have the ability to cross reference!!
Is the carrier 8E0 615 425B used on any other model in the Audi range(he's says with fingers crossed!). That might tells us if its possible.

If the discs fit with no clearance issues, then I dare say that Ben could be persuaded to source these 8E0 carriers 'for stock' - in the interests of science & the development of mankind

Must admit I'm not the best person to ask about cross-referencing. I just looked up that part on the MY03 'ACAS' vehicle. Think that part number means it was 1st used on the 8E series - it might be elsewhere.

If the disc has a total height of 36mm then I think we are on a winner !

Good news is these 8E0 discs 245x10 fit up a treat - done them tonight.

Other good news is that I test fitted the UrS6 carriers and calipers and they will be fine - the carrier fouls the splash shield but that is no problem as they will be removed.

Unrelated bad news for me is that my left (UK passenger side) rear caliper is just about seized solid. I was only just able to wind the ****** back in but it has nothing like the ease of movement required. After a short test drive I am getting some heat into the offending corner but the other side is much hotter - smells like an imminent MOT failure pending for me on Friday then...

                          Right, the discs arrived today.

                          Measurements are as follows:

                          245x10mm (8E0 615 601 P)

disc height is 40mm, hat height is 30mm

                          300x22mm (8E0 615 601 R)

disc height is 35mm, hat height is 13mm

By my reckoning that pushes the disc in towards the hub assembly by around 5mm.

                            Ben,

So the total height from top to botom is 35mm? If so that means the disc sits further away from the hub carrier which is what we are looking for. In other words it is shallower, assuming that the flange is the regulation 7.2mm thick.
Are you able to tell us if the carrier for that disc is is used on other models?

                              The rear carriers (8E0 615 425 B - retail @ £72.44 + VAT) are common to S4V8 A4 and Cabrio models.
