Yeah, i may give up on cruise. I will make all the connections i can for now. As it stands, it'll be the speed signal that i'm missing. If i stumble across one cheap enough, late b5 and c5 clusters look as tho they would fit in the b3/4 dash? Maybe i'll pick one of those up and see if that'd work. In the meantime, gotta make the rest of the connections and set up relays for injectors, coils, and o2 heaters. Looks like there's only 1 pin on a b3 fuse block for that stuff but i need 3 20a circuits.... don't feel like burning the car down so i will have to sort that out another way lol.

As for testing the actuator, i could do as ypu suggest, but i am not smart enpugh to know what the results would mean. We'll see what mikki can sort before i do something silly.

I think you might find cruise control just TOO difficult given the way it works. The PF engine had a separate module that physically connected to the throttle cable, but you can't do that on a "fly-by-wire" system. I had to replace it on my old (now defunct) S8 long long ago and IIRC it was deep down in the ECU box!

Back on the throttle actuator pinout, I'd probably get my multimeter out and check resistances between pins (including while moving the mechanism) to confirm the circuit diagram. But equally I've no doubt the wiring diagram is correct and MJ will confirm that.

Thanks, i have no issues with the pins on tbe connector, they are numbered. It that the wire colours between the module and connector do not match diagram. Mikki is gonna look at some body harnesses she's got this weekend n give me a hand.

Made some more connections to the coupe side of things. Been working on cruise control. It's nice because the wiring at the switch looks to be the same. But i don't think it'll be that easy. The ecu controls cruise vs a separate module. I can get everything sorted EXCEPT vehicle speed. In the coupe, the dash creates a speed signal for things like diff lock and cruise and radio volume. It's a dedicated wire. On the s8, the dash cluster creates the signal but then puts in in canbus. I no haz d2 cluster thus no canbus. I can get cqnbus converters to get the tach signal OUT of canbus but i can't find anything to get the right speed signal IN....

And because we all like pictures....

I could show you a diagram of the female T6 connector which gives the pin numbers if that helps you?

I've got the factory diagram. It just doesn't capture reality as well as it does everywhere else. I am now wondering if i am to ignore the wires coming out of the module and use the connector as the reference.

In other news, i was relieved of a great number of dollars this morning but i have 2 reconditioned heads keeping warm in my basement now. I am gping to fpcus on getting the wiring done over the holidays before i dig back into that.

I see you've had a very helpful reply from MJ ( ) on the D2 forum.
Reading that reminded me it's a 2-in-1 unit, i.e. parallel senders, which of course communicate directly with the ECU.
I vaguely recall now when researching my problems (mentioned briefly above) that VCDS shows both sensors individually.

Thanks, that's a good looking piece. Will keep it in mind.

Oddly I think both use the same unit.
Here in UK we have two relevant fora: D2forums.co.uk and forum.a8parts.co.uk though both probably need you to apply to join.

Incidentally I think I have one of those lying around somewhere; bought to solve a problem that turned out to be elsewhere (maladjusted brake light switch of all things!)
This is where the documentation is lacking i feel. The donor car was a 2002 s8 which is a facelift car but parts catalogues indicate this type of module which seems to be earlier???? Rgdesign sells an adapter but 1: $$$ and 2: i've already got this far and sorted the mechanical side of things. The output of both are the same i believe. I've asked on the 4.2 swap grpup on fb but no answers there. Will check out the forums you suggest. God i hate fb and miss proper forums.....

Edit: reread. This was always a drive by wire car. I got the engine, main harness and ecu. Did not get throttle pedal. I should have asked for it.... the wiring diagrams are lacking in info or the online parts catalogues have sent me down the wrong path.

    Only this has some relevance:
Pedal Sensor Adapter Lead LM9A6-A-P-01 We produce a range of throttle pedal adapter leads to suit different pedal sensors.  This adapter suits the Audi A8 type sensor Bosch 0280 752 022 & 0280 852 017.

I've got 95% of the s8 harness sorted for connection to the coupe fuse block. I think i am going to add external relays for a few things as it is asking for A LOT more power from 2 pins on the block. Need to loik at the v6 harness as there are a few connectors i can't recall what their function is.

But most importantly, does anyone have the pinout info for this throttle actuator? My diagrams from erwin do not have the info. It's from a d2 s8.

    20251212_160011.jpg 20251212_160021.jpg i appreciate any insight.

Got the quote for the heads today. My wallet says OUCH! They effectively need all the things so as to not be an oil burner. But they'll effectively be new heads when done.

I have parts coming from many places at the moment. There will be piles of stuff to assemble this winter.... i think i have found some proper bulkhead fittings but i need to get on with wiring before i pull any triggers on that. Baby steps.....

This is gonna go quiet for a while as i am now at the stage of dropping things off for specialists to deal with. Heads dropped yesterday at a machine shop, giving the cv joints to the propshaft people as they say they need them, and sending the ecu for tweaking today. While all that's happening, wiring fun in the basement....

Pulled the heads last night and have preserved the bottom end in plastic. I can't get over the condition of the bores.

    20251117_214706.jpg

But then this morning i started reading thru the manual in order to get the cams out so i can send the heads for cleaning and new valve seals. They put a tty spec on the cam bearing bolts. Fifty freakin two of them. I think this is about to get very friggin expensive!

    Thanks VAG.
