Need to decide if a full paint job or the engine swap gets priority.

That was the time I was still on audiforum.nl when it was a fun forum. I was planning on attending a meeting back then.
For me audiforum.nl is all about who has the best lease car, so I lost interest and found this forum where the oldies still get attention.
There are a lot of pictures in my build topic though.

True. I've sent you a message to avoid filling this topic with our conversation.

The wife prefers byzanz too. I must admit pre clearcoat it was hands down the winner. But with clear and in the sun, i am firmly back on the fence..... arrrrgh. The byzanz is certainly more subtle tho, which may be what wins in the long run.

I gotta get a wiggle on this now. I've got a minor medical procedure in 2 weeks suddenly and supposedly 4-6 weeks till i can do labour again. About when i expect my window will open at the body shop.

I have an evening's worth of welding and softline work to truely finish the AC, i want to weld up the antenna hole in the roof. I also want to find an appropriately sized tire for the 8.5" wheels and determine once and for all if i need to do any fender work. Or indeed if these wheels are possible at all. And in orser to save some $$ at the bodyshop, sand down the primer....

Oh, and remove the drivetrain and swap suspension....
Nice to see the progress again and share that with us! I'd vote byzanz as well. Such a nice color.

About the fat 5 wheels: they are from a slightly later period. So although I like them a lot, is there not an older wheel that would be to your liking? Ofcourse the Bolero's come to mind, however not sure if those are to be had in Canada...

Leaning towards byzanz because of the rarity and period correctness.

    Decisions decisions....

merlin on the left, byzanz on the right. Before i sprayed, i thought merlin was a forgone conclusion. Pretty sure byzanz takes it.... (ZERO fender prep, just primed over whatever surface was there)

And did some more poking at the wheels. Suuuuper tight fitment up front. Flirting with stretched tires i would think....which are pretty stupid in my opinion. Hmmmm

    Hmmmm.

Rears fit no problem. Fronts are tight. I may decide to work my spare set of fenders and get both painted and decide later? The only fat fives i have seen of late are still attached to the car they came with....so close lol. Only 30kms from home too..... must be patient...

So, on the positive side, i can now say i can tig weld aluminum tubes. On the negative side, i never wanna do that again lol. I have a few tabs to add to them but the AC pipes are all made. It sucked lol. The LAST fitting took 4 attempts.... (of course).

Anyways, i gotta go thru my stuff and then order up the soft line bits i need and then i can wrap up the fabrication once and for all??

Shouldnt need to roll with 8,5 wheels as long as your ET isnt bonkers.

Right, swage tool here, instantly made welding pipes easier. Still a fugly joint but i'll get there..... should have the ac plumbed in a coupla days now.

And i have got the colour almost sorted. It's goin purple. down to 2 shades of it. Aerosols on order and my spare fender is prepped. Only question left to answer bodywise is whether or not i need to make room for 8.5" wheels or not. It'd probably be better to see if i need to roll things BEFORE it gets painted lol

Well, learnin stuff is hard.... tig welding thinwall aluminum tubing to start is definitely starting not at the beginning lol.

Got a few tubes started. The joints are ugly. Then i screwed up a measurement had hafta restart lol.... oops. I am going to get a swage tool and maybe make my life easier with fillet welds as oppsed to butt welds on not perfect fitment.

Regardless, finished in a few days i think.

My paint samples have arrived so i'm gonna get started on that. No huge rush as i called the body shop and it looks like i'll be delayed a month getting in there.

Basically, i hope to be stripping the car in the next couple weeks and sanding it down again and getting ready to send it out and pay a rediculous bill........ sigh...

I'll play with things more soon. Thanks for the info.

In the meantime, i am starting to prep things to get painted. I stripped the interior (or what little i had in it) last night. The aluminum tubing for the ac system arrive today, along with a cheap bender for it. I'll spend the next few days forming n welding that up. Once that's done, i think it'll be time to pull the engine and finalize the scheduling for paint. I've got samples arriving today so that'll probably get sorted this weekend.....or at least narrowed down.

I am also possibly changing wheel choice. The set i am picking up tonight is 18", which i think might be too big for this car but, they are selling cheap so not detrimental if i don't like them on this. They may work on my s6 though so that could be a fallback plan.

The other choice is 17" but no luck just yet. I can find them in 5x100 all day long but 5x112 is proving elusive. I of course found a set (in toronto) when i was browsing initially a couple years ago (i sorta feel i "settled" on the avus wheels) but now that i am serious, hen's teeth....
