  • So, on the stand with the harness and intake removed. As expected, it'll need a full gasket kit. Just a bit gooey just about everywhere lol. I am somewhat concerned it's burning a bit of oil, the port on the right valve cover comoletely coked up. Fingers crossed this is a clogged oil control ring issue that can be soaked out over a coupla nights.

And just holding the rad up in between the headlights suggests that if i say screw it and go with aero catches as opposed to the hood release and make a whole new structure, it is possible to fit it. I have 3 pairs of upper headlight mounts/hood latches so i definitely can try....

    • I love audi lego

      20250816_202315.jpg

Tried to toss it in the engine bay and as a surprise to no one, it didn't go. The mounts i made/modified to fit the v6 are totally in the way and nowhere near the right spot.

      20250816_202330.jpg

They will be chopped tomorrow and i will start from a clean slate.

The s6 rad fits between the rails with room to spare. I will determine it's fate once the engine is in.

      • Maybe do a compression test on the engine before you cut your v6 mounts out
        But I do love a V8

        • Wouldn't matter, v6 engine is gone. May the bridges you burn light your path forward!!!! I have a video of it running prior to stripping, sounded great. I'm not TOO concerned at the moment.

Besides, i can't do a compression test without it mounted securely, my stand ain't secure lol. And i don't have a leakdown tester that i could use on the stand.

Looking at parts diagrams, seems on a d2, the engine and trans are mounted to the front subframe. You guys think there's an issue with replicating that on a small chassis from a structural standpoint?

          • So, got into shop before the heat today. (34⁰ again yestersay!) And got to cuttin. How tight is a 40v in a b3? Yes.

            20250817_101040.jpg 20250817_101803.jpg 20250817_101038.jpg 20250817_101030.jpg

Resting on the subframe, oe mounts will not work as they rest on top of the front anti roll bar. The exhaust and coolant pipe are too close to steering arm for comfort (are the curved ones available like for v8 c4s?) And the timing cover contacts the core support. So first order of business is to get started on the engine side arms

did i predict tight? Yes. This tight? Nope lol. I suspect (hope) it will improve slightly when i get it a bit lower.

            • Chopped the top off the middle of the subframe and now the only proper interferance is the coolqnt pipe on the right side tie rod.. part of me wonders if i have them on the wrong side, coulda sworn one has a bend. Need to look again before i start messin with the pipe. At any rate, need to confirm it some but i THINK it's in the right spot to start working on mounts. Need to pull it again though to clean up the remnents of the old mounts and to install the starter.

Sorta optimistic i can have it supported by the end of next weekend, it seems summer died today, actually only mid 20s in the forecast suddenly.....

edit: Triple checked tie rod, i have it right (shocking!). It's just bent in the wrong plane.... so i need to massage the cooling pipe a bit.

              • Annnnd no way in hell the s6 rad works. Short of putting in single rounds from a mk1 golf, but i think that would look goofy as hell....

                • Welp, the engine offset is REALLY making this difficult. Broke out the ruler last night and have it down to within 5mm of "correct". ZERO room on passenger side.

I've ordered some generic chevy 350 mounts in hopes the packaging will be easier. I am still pretty sure it's all gonna land on the subframe instead of the frame rails but the different form factor may change that. The main concern is to get them as low as possible to stay away from the exhaust. Lotsa pics out there of melted poly mounts lol.

Damnit, not getting it mounted anytime soon. Light bulb turned on, do i need a transmission spacer? Asked seller of the engine and yes i do. To ebay i go. Two weeks shipping.... boo.

                  • So, managed to score a gearbox spacer locally for peanuts and the engine mounts arrived last night. Son's birthday party tonight so no work will be done but i will have the day tomorrow and shpuld be able to get the mounts sorted. They are much more compact that the oe ones. I have no doubt they will transmit more nvh, but needs must. I am not completely insane and will not modify a frame rail to make it fit!

                    • So, i think my wife just issued me a challenge. She's always wanted a mustang. Those have become quite $$$$. She admitted to me that she rather likes the coupe and that it could be a valid substitute. I told her that at the moment, there will be no ac due to space constraints for cooling. She didn't like that idea.

So today, i am going to see how far back i can get the engine is suppose. Experience with cv joint at extreme angles suggests they are much more tolerant that you'd think....i figure if i can get it back 30-40mm from where it is currently placed, i have a chance at a big radiator and ac fitting. Maybe even with the viscous fan??

                      • Put the ac rad at the back under the rear seats its been done before

                        • How would it get airflow??? I am cautiously optimistic. I got it sitting on mounts with the gearbox pushed back 25-30mm. I have 50mm between the back of the b4 v6 condenser and the front of the viscous fan. I have not trimmed any of the rad support yet to sneak a cm or two. I may make it work yet. I understand people use mk4 vw rads in these swaps, those are cheap enough for me to go n try and they are not massively thick.

                          • The guy who did the v8tt 4.0 swap had it in the back and it worked good I heard.

Shame you don't have a euro bumper, ive seen pics of a aan swapped cabriolet with a v6 rad, aircon rad and huge intercooler at the front.

                              • I prefer the look of euro bumpers for sure but given how people drive around here, i MUCH prefer the strength of the north american bumper! I am happy with my v8, that doesn't mean i want it in my teeth!

Got a fair chunk of welding in my immediate future. Picked up a 6spd tdi gearbox for my s6 yesterday. Will be using it to sort gearbox mounts in the coupe for now. The engine mounts need to be strengthened and finish welded first though. Fingers crossed the bell housings aren't toooooo different on the top and i run into fitment issues now....
