Come on man. Hammer a 12 point socket onto it. Then get a nice big breaker bar on the case It worked for me. I had to do about 6 or more of them this way.

Brute force, thats the way to go. Tbh if it was me and I had that sort of task infront of me (and it was all mine) i'd just go at it any way I could do till I got it all sorted.

haha. well if it was a hex head that had rounded off i'd hammer a socket on. but it's round with an allen head so it's round on the outside so I dunno if the socket would grip.

and i do intend to do anything and everything to get the job done but the diff is to go down to Sal so I really don't want to do any damage to it.

balls to it - that bolt is coming off on saturday if I have to chew it off. :mischeif:

It's a tried and tested method. Just find a socket that will nearly fit over the head of the offending bolt, and hammer it on.

And then what do you do with the socket afterwards?! Must be FUBAR'd?

Nope. Not if you use a decent socket. As I said, I had to do about half of my propshaft bolts like this. I continue to use the socket.
You just need a vice or mole grips to get the offending bolt back out the socket. Sometimes you wish you didn't smack the socket on so far.

If you have rounded of a cap(allen) headed bolt, use one of your new tools (torq bit) hit that into where you would fit the allen key use a breaker bar to undo.

Id go with 4wheeldrifter on this as the only other option would be is to cut it and then worry about the stud when you have the diff on a workbench

did you find the spline sockets for the driveshafts in the end? Was doing the same job on Sunday - picked up a set of laser manufactured torx and a set of splines for i think £7.99 at my local factors. I think the driveshaft bolts are M8 IIRC. A quick blast with the freeze spray and all 12 came off dead easy.

Tried to do the same on the cv going from prop to diff they were normal hex (M6) i think and managed to shift all but one which I managed to round Those spiral sockets are excellent, if anyone remembers my sump plug which i butchered, they were the only things which worked in the end

                      Good luck

haha. alright lads. i'm leaving technical at the door and knocking a socket onto it then. Sal just agreed too.
really don't want the stud left in the diff. that'll be Plan Z.

oh yes - new shell is arriving wed eve. the madness will go up a notch then.

there's a good place on the other side of glasgow where I got my access spanners (banana shaped chaps) so i'm going to nip in and see what they have in spline sockets. machinemart is nearby anyway so i'll get them there if need be.
I was looking at the spiral sockets too. that's what Mike recommended. they must be handy. There are smaller sets that do 6, 8, 10 and 12mm. think the 12 might fit if I can pick up a set before saturday (when i'll just start battering everything within reach with a hammer)
                          cheers
