No I've not welded it up yet Kit, I'm waiting until I have the rest of the exhaust made up so I can do it all at once, should be one of the last things to do, as it is one of my favourite and most satisfying jobs

Gearbox ready to go. Modded linkage with new ball joint & boot, new slave cylinder, new INA release bearing and filled with Motul gear 300

ALex, Motul 300 is gl5. No good. too slippy. Has to be gl4.
Best change it as it results in a slow change and wears the syncros.

I asked Oilman aka Opie Oils what was best to use in this gearbox and the Gear 300 was their recommendation. I thought the syncro wear issue was old news now due to more modern materials?

What new materials? The gearbox will still have syncro hubs and baulk rings.
My A6 had god knows what oil in when I got it. Every change in the first three gears was crunch. Changed to gl4 and it's as good as new. I'd made the same mistake with the RS2. Thought the oil was gl4 but didn't like the gear change and reread the bottle to find it was gl4/5. Changed it for gulf gl 4 and it's a different box.
With the correct oil these boxes go forever.

I read that the modern ester based synthetics don't corrode the brass syncros? Using it in the S4 (B6) so same generation gearbox and the shifting is fine but of course if it was wearing the syncros out I'd not really be able to tell.

Fuchs recommend a GL-4 and a GL-5 for the 0A3 box:

Their GL-5 is a ester synthetic like the Gear300

From when I strip race gearboxes they don't have time to corrode. It's just the way a box is designed to work that I'm talking about. The baulk ring has to grip the ramp on the gear to slow it and grab hold of it. If the oil is too slippy the ring has a harder job of getting hold of it which wears the ring and if you have sod all mechanical sympathy then wears the syncro hub teeth. I make a point of showing this to my drivers so they understand what damage they cause by rushing the change. When a box is used for racing the wear and damage happens a lot quicker than a road box so seeing the cause and affect is easier.
Change it.

Really like you gearbox there, how did you paint it? did you sandblast it before you painted it or how did you do?

I used an acid cleaner to get rid of the dirt & oil residue etc. then a dust coat of etch primer, coat of 2k high build primer, then two coats of 2k silver
