the struts were in a pretty poor shape so decided to blast as much as possible off with a wire brush attachment on the drill
Went from this (just after taking worst off):

more wire brushing and oxide sanding then combination of the following:

delivers this:

They arent perfect by any stretch but a damn sight better than they were and should be ready for reinstallation tomorrow once i get the new bolts and castle nuts from audi.sigpic

Been a busy couple of weeks but shes back on her wheels and passed the MOT - failin on......the Horn
traced to a missing rubber boot and corroded connection as a result. fixed and passed
Spent the last few nights and early mornings sorting al manner of bits and pieces but as of now:
carpet cleaned and back in
Replaced the broken trim on the drivers seat hinge
rear speakers sorted and all trim back in the car
Re-earthed the xenons and the warning light has gone
cleaned all the rubber seals with the Gummi stuff....easy on and looks to work well - nice one Steve
replaced and cleaned up the contacts on the rear light - cheers Pete
Took it out for a proper run last night and apart from a slight tracking issue its running pretty well. was worried that the carpet back in would kill the sound - not a chance
looks great inside with everything back in but still as loud as f**k
Still a few things to resolve:
After run pump mod to fit the plug on the loom
new sunroof clips for the arms to press into as both had split
check oil in diff and gearbox
paint the roof - looking unlikely now with time pressures
alignment to get it spot on - perfectly driveable as is but not quite right
install 2 new a/c lines and re gas
re-install wheel arch liners
isolate and resolve off throttle noise - poss replace clutch/bearing as a result
give it a proper polish
So much to do, so little time

quick update on the outstanding list:
Still a few things to resolve:
After run pump mod to fit the plug on the loom - completed, just needed to reduce gap between pins on the pump connector
new sunroof clips for the arms to press into as both had split - still not sourced
check oil in diff and gearbox - rear diff oil is clear and seems to be fine, not check gearbox yet
paint the roof - looking unlikely now with time pressures
alignment to get it spot on - perfectly driveable as is but not quite right
install 2 new a/c lines and re gas - Still not sourced the hardline despite emailed/calling everyone and anyone breaking a coupe
re-install wheel arch liners
isolate and resolve off throttle noise - poss replace clutch/bearing as a result - Had Djones listen in yesterday and seems to be nothing to worry about though getting shot of the pwerflex rear diff mount to see if that helps too
give it a proper polish - not yet but soon

You're getting there! My list isn't getting any smaller here, what with being stuck at stupid work!
It's going to be a race to the finish (start!).

less than a week to go and the aircon pipework has finally been resolved thanks to a couple of people on here - thanks Newsh and Lee
Car gets a regas today - rs24 drop in for £55, its denser than the later R134a so should hang about in the system a little longer and removes a bit of cost changing regas ports etc too. Hopefully it will get some new oil, a bit of gas and spring into life again
couple of pics:
newly installed drier

note the difference between the 7a/NG hose and the 3b one on the left - the non 3b one will not clear the chassis the pump is mounted on without changing the orientation and even then the other end connection is still at 90 degrees to the drier so no obvious way to make it fit

Pirtek made up a hose using the old connector from the 3b and taking one of the connectors off the other pipe. Details here if anyone else needs to get one made at some point:

as you can see, the new pipe is thinner walled overall than the NG one but made from the same pipe manufacturer which is good

all looking fairly tidy under there now, new discs, pads, drop links, repainted struts, new top mounts, H&R avant springs and new strut/hub bolts

Still a bit to do, new H&R's for the rear, install the stock rear diff mount from Alex, new rear drop links and an alignment......then she's ready to rock - 6 days and counting
