Grabbed a 6 Speed Gearbox from 2002 A4 Quattro TDi 180 bhp model which "sixth gear packed up" that came up for sale locally.

They are a pretty big lump.

Is this for an oil cooler? There are two, the one pictured, and one further forward near the OS output.

Anyway I fancy opening it up and having a look.

yes oil cooler pipes. You can either join them together or fit a external oil cooler.

Oh yes. The 6 speed boxes are hefty beasties.

It looks like a FTM box, and that comes with an oil pump for a cooler, as you have spotted. The only problem is the final drive is 3.89, not 4.11.

Ahh well, it was cheap. Might just open it for a look and see how difficult they are to strip/rebuild.

What part of the box determines the final drive?

Oil pump might be useful for a retrofit?

The 35/9 tooth crown wheel/pinion ratio on the front diff determines the final drive. CGR/CRB is 37/9.

Yeah. FTM. You could fit it with a rear diff with from a V6 quattro with a 3.89 final drive.

Got the CGR transmission manual, should be able to get the gearbox video.

Anything essential anybody would recommend before dismantling?

Meh, I started the car this evening and got the battery warning light on, showed 10v on the gauge. Drove home and after a couple of miles the autocheck battery light came on.

Approx 15v across the battery, about 14 with the engine running

The alternator belt was slightly loose, so tensioned that slightly. Higher voltage across the battery with then engine running now.

Does that sound like just an under tensioned belt or something more sinister?

optimal voltage at the battery is 13.4 - 14.4 volts depending on wether the system is loaded or not , IMO at 15v id say u have an issue

                                Alternator was gubbed.

I put a spare battery and tools in the car before heading off to work, car died about two minutes walk fror work, so managed to cruise into a parking space, changed the battery on my lunch brake and drove home after work. I found an alternator I had replaced which had been working properly but had noisy bearings, swapped it on and all sorted now.
