Sounds like you've given it every chance. I remember you posted a while ago, you removed old immobilser wiring i think? Any chance some wiring has been damaged after or is loose? I dare say you've checked this 20 times at least tho

I'd offer to come around today to have a look over if i thought it would be any help, but my knowledge is nothing like yours.

S2 avant or RS2 if you have the money sounds like a good choice.

    Andy,

if you decide to give it the last chance... Please try to post all troubleshooting information/history in one post. You may need to change the perspective.

As per my texts, i cant believe it. I often dream of a nice 'fast' car when im either driving fast in the 90 with my bones rattling and back hurting or driving slow at 60mpg in the comfortable and quiet Passat. Would you not consider SORNing it and forgetting about it for a few months to cool off?

Sorry to hear your predicament Andy- hell, if you can't fix it, nobody can....and I understand the desire for change of scene- good to have a break from the same marque/model.
I've testdriven anotherE46 330 Bmw last week and an E34 535i sport this very evening...but in travelling to see the beastie tonight I covered 145 fast miles in my very imperfect S2- 'twas a complete blast...and decided nowt can touch it...(despite the parts issues and garage ignorance of the model)
Best of luck in the hunt for something fun

I know I'm biased but I'd go for either a full sorted S2 Avant or RS2, practical (you can live in it), fast, reliable when looked after and now appreciating in value.

As per my PM I started eyeing up fast BMW's not long ago then thought better of it and decided to stick with what I know and am happy working on. By modern standards an RS2 is a piece of piss to work on, the only problem is availability and cost of parts.

Talking of BMW's Charlie has a very sad looking 330CI on his drive at the moment, the result of a 'misjudgement', though he's much more careful with his RS2's so I can't see either of them being a source of parts soon......... Alex.

    Nice find Noel, proper sporty

I absolutely love the B6 A4/S4 (that's why I've kept mine so long, even when the steering wheel is on the "wrong" side) and if you fancy a reasonably priced solid car that's reasonably fast and you can throw a kayak on the roof, bike on the back etc it's a good choice. Just make sure your old banger is a fast old banger though because it's really difficult getting anything extra out of the V6 or V8. So you'll need to get your jollies elsewhere. The S4 still shifts. You might get frustrated without a turbo though. I'd still buy one no problem. each to their own though.

If you want a fast sensible car what about a B7 2.0T and tune the **** out of it? Or what about a C5 2.7 biturbo A6 quattro? or a C6 3.0 tdi quattro A6? I've heard they're a lot of fun for derv burners.
I cant quite believe it either, seems like I have always had this 3B, and always would, other stuff has come and gone but this one was my beastie.

I also cant decide quite what I want. I fancy something that can be taken on track, which most road cars dont like without extensive mods, but I also tend to like a fast practical car.

However now is a possibly a good time to try a silly car instead of always being sensible.

B6 S4 will be too slow mate. Nice motors, and good at everything, but you will be bored quite quickly.

Nice condition S2 or RS2 will be deserving all your hard work.. in fact there is a nice silver one after a new home. Plus if you need any parts I heard there's a few scrappers lying about around Brecon ...
    V8 S4 just too uninspiring?

I will see what is up for sale when I have some cash, I suppose ram raiding the Welsh gents is always an option, Charlie doesnt really need 2 RS2s anyway, thats just greedy!

I have thought about it a lot, its not just a knee jerk reaction.

Its a cat C car I got when I was 19, fixed and had great fun in. It also has previous damaged repair from before I got it. It has had poor pain in the past. There are hundreds of tiny fixes it needs. I would also do a lot of things differently if I was starting again. The next stage I would want to do with the car is expensive, and I am just not willing to invest that in it.

This is just the final straw, I did seriously think about breaking it last year as well.

I am finished spending money on it, I will sell the parts and then buy something else, I might even buy a "nice" S2, at least they are worth something, this will always only be worth a couple of grand, or lots more in bits.

I dont have as much time to work on it anymore, and would quite like a car to drive when I have free time. Also fed up of working on cars in the drive, whilst this sits on the lift in the garage.

So need to part out, and then decide what to replace it with

    Similar;

    S2 avant, RS2 spec
    RS2 avant
    K04 B5 S4
    B5 RS4
    B6 S4 (too slow?)

    Or totally different;

    s2000
    350z (too heavy?)
    Z4 3.0 coupe
    Z4M coupe

    Maybe a B6 S4 for a fun kayak/holiday motor and a rusty S2000 for a track slag?

I kind of fancy actually having a nice car for once (I have always have rough cars), but I also enjoy driving the old scrap that can monster new stuff
