Hook an LED up to your dizzy and crank it over.
Just using up stock of cam and dizzy gears? As long as they were fitted as a pair it was fine.

Thanks for the link, I need to order some LEDs, I will try this with the dizzy off the car, ignition on and turn the rotor arm by hand.

Peel back the rubber boot on this hall sensor connector and connect a DMM to terminals 1 and 2 with the ignition key on. The voltage measured across pins 1 and 2 will be ~4 volts when the distributor hall sensor is shielded by the metal cover (hat) on the distributor shaft. The voltage should be between 0-0.5 volts when the hall sensor is not shielded by the metal hat. You can remove the distributor cap, and slowly rotate the engine around while you watch the voltage measured at pins 1 and 2.

I am not too aware about AAN cams and tuna can hall sensor.

But again 7a and 3b must be the same. Either I am very mistaken or... lets wait for some more replies.

Left one does not seem like it was 7a/3b gear.

this is how 3b/7a gear looks like: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-I5-20...-/221181943104
note the angle of gear teeth

it looks like 10v distributor on the left. can you please check again which was from your 3b and which was a loan distributor from 7a?
The distributor on the left is definitely the one that has been fitted to my 3B since I got it in 2009

I thought 3B and 7A dizzy was the same with a different rotor arm, also people fit the same metal gears, and fit 7a cams to 3bs.

The AAN with the cam position sensor in the dizzy location has the fine gear drive (3B left, AAN right)

So is my car an oddball? Or has a mish mash dizzy?
