Ok its been a while so little up date:

Finally got round to doing some shopping, lots of new parts, too many to list:

I started off by following the tappet refurb thread http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=76499, what a fiddly job that was, they are now chilling in oil and will not be put into the head until im almost ready to run the engine.

Started building up the engine too. Got the crank, pistons and conrods in with new big end bearings, main bearings and piston rings. Bottom end is pretty much there, just need to put the head on then start re fitting all the sundries.

I also picked a load of shiny parts up from the vapour blasters of which i have no pics these will follow shortly.

Managed to get hold of some of these too

312mm callipers/carriers from a TT. I will add to this thread HERE, hopefully trying to cover the conversion in more detail.

Thats it for now, more to come soon

Sure you're aware that the KR exhaust cams need a new keyway machining to fit the inlet properly. If you just plonk them in, then the car will run like crap (just remedied this on a valver golf).

      Otherwise... looks like great fun

@ rusty - I ended up using the ABF cams, just the inlet cam actually. The exhaust was the same as the ACE one.

@ skull - this crank is the 1.8t crank. The 16v engine is still in the car and running spot on. All this build is getting the 1.8t ready for transplant.

Cool. ABF cams seem to be the cams of choice on Club GTI at the mo too, I know that swapping from 2x KR exhaust to a KR inlet / exhaust setup (on correct timing!) made the car run like a dream. I'm sure the KR exhaust x2 is good, it just needs to be setup properly, either with a new keyway or a properly setup chain wheel.

Yeah i looked into all this before i did it, i had a set of KR cams and a set of ABF cams and ended up measuring the lobe heights etc and getting info on the duration and figured the ABF ones would be best, and ther were a straight swap. Infact i tried the KR ones in the head and they made the cam chain extremely tight. There is alot more info on audifans somewhere that i put up.

Cant wait to get the car in bits and start puttin the 1.8 20v Turbo in now. All the bits from the tubular conversion will be up for sale once i get the 16v out.

What ecu are you going to use for the 1.8t ? OEM, Vems, Qpeng?

that reminds me i have a de-immobilsered 1.8t ecu from a 1998 a6.... that would be a great purchase for your project lol

Well this is the thing. Im gona use the stock ECU (that i was gona have de-immobilised) to get it up and running as a stock engine. Then i will change the turbo and other associated parts and was thinking just a professional re-map.

But i can honestly say i dont know that much about this kind of thing and this is a steep learning curve for me.

I have all the standard loom and would like to use an OEM ECU to keep things simple.

Sam - What engine is the ECU for? Might be interested

What sort of a job is it to have the immo disabled?

5 plug ecu had motronic v3.2, 2 plug - 3.8, maybe even newer.
For the first start, you could leave everything as is, immobiliser wiring is really simple. You can wrap immo reader coil + key with tape and put it all under the dash. Obviously you have to connect it. Is it simple enough?

also if its 2 plug ecu you will need to use the clocks also, u could use any form a6 passat etc as long as its 2 plug as im sure you can code them together with vagcom, obvioulsy a de-immo ecu means you can keep your original clocks
