Roads Report Details Hazards Hidden Beneath the Surface.

    image_81255.png

Every 4 yrs in the United States, the American Society of Civil Engineers puts out an Infrastructure Report Card for the nation, which covers 18 categories from Aviation to Waste-water. WRT roads, this part of the report is euphemistically called ‘the Pot-hole Indicator’ (I've emphasized one word from the report extract below.) The latest report assigned a grade of D and says that ‘over 40% of the system is now in poor or mediocre condition. Of note, the vast majority of roads in poor and mediocre conditions tend to be on urban and rural collectors and the non-interstate system, while the interstate system tends to be in good condition.’

They actually measure the surface roughness of highways and road-ways to assess ride quality, and assign a number from what is called the International Roughness Index to each. This helps them prioritize repairs etc. based on science, (instead of political constituency, one supposes!). Unfortunately, the current political situation may not necessarily allow much improvement soon, as budget-balancing has now been passed; to the next generation. The report goes on to say ‘Overall, our deteriorating roads are forcing the nation’s motorists to spend nearly $130 billion each year on extra vehicle repairs and operating costs.’

The situation nearer to you may be similar. However, those statistics need not include you to the same extent. Don’t get caught out, Strut and Arm-Stops together offer preventative protection unlike much else to your car’s vital and most stressed suspension attachment-point joints. The continued good mechanical health these mods help ensure, does much towards your driving enjoyment including improvements to A-arm bush and top-mount service lives, dynamic wheel alignment, steering response, stability while braking and more. Strut-Stops and Arm-Stops provide for simple, cheap, and effective elimination of several routine maintenance chores that will need re-visiting; a lot less often.

Does a surprise package content herald the return of the vaunted 1st choice top-mount?...

A recent conversation with a fellow forum member (Farhazaftab786g) that began with him asking what top-mount I might recommend, took an unexpected turn as he later related that he had ordered a pair of Sachs 802 453's from Auto Doc and in fact received boxes that said the same, however inside them was this unexpected top-mount (see his photo below).

Those familiar with the original and (as far as I know) NLA strictly dealer-sourced Audi-BOGE 8A0 412 355 A may recognize that the mount's markings (in the rubber) here are not quite the same as the dealer items (Audi logo, made in Germany, etc. are missing, but does reflect that the box says ZF Aftermarket, Made in China), and the usual wax preservative is not present, but that may not matter. In Canada at least, one never received dealer-sourced top-mounts in a box, let alone one that didn't say it was from Audi.

And yet this is the Audi P/N of the last and highest capacity mount and which was never listed in ETKA. I'm therefore quite hopeful that this mount is actually made to the 355A spec., which only ZF of Germany and their partner TMT in China would have knowledge of - through their ownership of the BOGE design, and which along with Sachs, is one of their house brands. Besides, at this late stage they may have realized that, as mounts of this last Audi P/N are (in my view) backwards compatible to the earlier cars, they may need only one or two top-mounts of this type in their aftermarket catalog. Simpler for them and better for us. If that proves to be true, I think Ferdinand von Zeppelin (ZF's founder) would have approved of their decision. Time will tell.
