Hoping to finish fitting the new slave cylinder in my car tomorrow, if that fixes my clutch issue then i'm gonna be ordering my Porsche Callipers from 911direct or whatever it was LOL.

Any word on group buy or chasing them for an answer?

If anybody's interested Porschepart/Club Autosport (01384 410879) have got some used Boxter S calipers which are the same as 996 fronts. Porschapart Ltd (01706 824053) also had some 996 fronts. No connection to sellers.

            Righto chaps,

Just want to clarify a few things.

The 'BIG RED' caliper is called that as there was a smaller red ( 968CS etc.).

The big red is considerably larger than the 993/996 Carrera. I compared my 993 Carrera caliper to a big red on a mates Big brake Porker. The difference is noticeable. Big reds work on 32mm disks as standard.

'Big blacks' are more expensive than their red brothers ( sounds like a Shaft film!) as they don't make as many!.

            Disk balance!
If anyone is turning down the disks for clearance issues it may be an idea to get them re-balanced. The Zimmerman A8 disks I got had a 'chunk' machined out of the edge to balance it. The 993 Carrera disk had a balance wire/spring shoved up one of the vanes. This will cause vibration/damage your wheel bearings.

            AFAIK

Just phoned the local Porsche dealer, the 'Big red' calipers are £650 each from them.

              These are 996 turbo monoblocks.

650 for a pair or £650 for the left side and another £650 for the left side?

                  LOL....

Think i'll stick with the idea of getting them from a breakers then.... 250 a pair sounds far more appealing!!

Sorry but the term "Big Red" applies to the earlier 2 piece caliper, the 996 Monoblocks are called just that.
However it is a term that people have applied to every red Porsche caliper, think along the lines of "Hoover" instead of vaccum cleaners.

I just got my A8 discs turned down to 307mm. Didn't get them re-balanced though. Won't they be out of balance as soon as a lip develops on the edge anyway ?

What size A8 discs fit this conversion? 323mm or 314mm?

And what should the thickness be?

I want to keep the standard 16" Avus wheels so I've gone for the 314x30mm A8 disc machined down to 307mm. You could keep the diameter at 314mm but clearance is minimal - see the problems Alistiar C had:

                              Good question.....

Brake disks are castings, they come from the foundry and are mounted on a cnc machining unit ( lathe etc.)

if the casting is 1 mm in one direction then the 'unmachined' sections will be displaced slightly. Decent disks are then balanced. if a lip wears on the disk this will still be concentric ( and so will be in balance)

The imbalance is in the centre where the main mass of unmachined casting is.

There are 2 ways to balance a disk:
1/ Machine a lump out of the disk edge ( in one area)
2/ Stick a spring like length of metal up one of the vents or a spring clip.

                              Ant/
this thread is not about any conversion in particular. I am using:
                              A8 disks 314mm x 30mm ( standard)
                              996 Carrera calipers ( silver)
MartinJS caliper brackets, very sexy, ( the brackets, not Martin!)
This seems to fit within the 16" AVUS wheel.

There are lots of different calipers for Porsches with slight variations in size , colour etc. They may fit differently, Alistair machined his calipers which I do not fancy doing.

                              996 S, Turbo etc disk thickness 32mm
                              A8 30mm ( there is a 25mm version as well)
                              996 Carrera 28mm
                              Morris Marina 10mm

Corey, I feel you are correct but I have seen what is called the 'Big Red' and the caliper is considerably bigger than my 996 Monoblocks, I had them in my hand,

I would say the Big Red includes:
993TT and special option RS2 ( same caliper)
                              996 Carrera S
                              996 Turbo.

I have been looking for a site which shows the difference between a small red and a bigger red. I would say the 'big red' is a Porsche caliper which fits on a 32mm disk and is red!

Red does not make it big though.....

                              HTH
