Just took another look at the figures and its no way worth doing.

Your gonna be lookng at around £400 just for the callipers, if you go the breakers route as described further back, the price is at most £400 all fitted to the car with the discs pads the lot!!

For the sake of brand new instead of slightly used i cant see the justification for the costs!

Rebuild cost of the calipers works out about £100 for the pistons and seals alone + VAT, then painting etc.

Disk size for the 993tt calipers and the 996TT calipers is 323 x 32 mm AFAIK

The 993 tt calipers are no better at braking than the 996TT calipers pistons and pad area are the same I believe.

YOU KNOW YOU WANT THEM !!!! ( said in a low hypnotic husky seductive voice!)

            Size matters, but not always!

David, looking at the page you took that picture from, It says there that is is cheaper to upgrade 993tt calipers to 996 turbo spec rather than rebuild the 993tt two piece calipers.....

....in fact you can see the bolts in the 993tt caliper

it even quotes "BIG REDS - by far, the most popular brake upgrades for the UrS are built around the 2-peice Porsche/Brembo 4-piston, aluminum caliper from the Porsche 993tt. These calipers are commonly referred to as "Big Reds" (BR)."

I'm with Coreey on this one - Big reds are 2 piece

Anyone tell me what these are part numbers for:

                996.352.425 und 996.352.426

Are they 996 Turbo or GT3 calipers - I'm guessing they are not monoblocks?

                Cheers

they are monoblocks but surely a GT3 uses wider disks than 28mm!!

I think the guy forgot to mention they are GT3 REARS - ie same as current Carrera / Boxster S fronts.

Judging from the colour, I'd say they'd been used in anger once or twice!

I didn't mean those but I had seen them. As Alistair says they look well used - I particularly like the way the 'porsche' has discoloured from white to yellow!

I've seen some others which give the part numbers 996.352.425 and 996.352.426 but claim to be for 315-340mm by 30mm disks.

                      Can anyone confirm this?

                      Cheers

Well I'm fairly certain that my calipers are 996.351.425 and 996.351.426
And I'm fairly sure that Peter's calipers are 996.352.425 and 996.352.426

As for the differences I really couldn't say. Look identical to one another. Should be going down to the Porsche dealership this afternoon, so I'll ask what the middle digits refer to.
Fairly sure they're designed for 28mm disks but its well known that 30mm can be made to fit.
On Boxster S fronts they are used on 318mm but no doubt when they're used on the back of a GT3 they are bolted to a larger diameter disk.HTH.

ops: I was thinking the bolt ends were the caliper pad guide pins ( the ones you filed down 1mm) The caliper was the Australian Version ( upside down).

                            @ Alistair

So it looks like someone (Peter) has fitted calipers with these part nos to the front?

What work is need to make a 30mm disk fit?

Can't be 100% sure about Peters - will have to wait until they come back from being touched up to be certain of part nos & fitment. Will ask at the parts desk tonight if I can.

30mm disks - need the pad guide pins opening out. See the other 996 caliper thread for details.

Rear calipers - has been asked about a few times. Yes you could probably use them as rears on an S2. But you wouldn't have a handbrake. MOT people don't look too favourably at this mod.:wacked:
