it is still possible to have a spark but only a very faint one if the timing is still not 100% spot on.

I had this on my 90 20v and it was a broken flywheel pin.

If you remove the crank position sender and rotate the engine by hand, you can see if the pins are ok through the hole

Heard a rumour about some pin that breaks and fixing it involves removing the gearbox so this must be it eh !!!!

Is it easy to check for damage ?? Will there be a tooth missing on the flywheel or is there gaps ( if that makes sense !!! ). I take it the crank sensor is the one located on the bellhousing about halfway down on the nearside is it ???

yes thats the one, take it out and spin the engine around(socket on crank)you will be able to feel the pin with your finger(careful you dont get it caught!!),there is only one pin incidently. If there is a tooth missing you will notice it as there are gaps.

it is possible to replace that pin by taking out the starter but i wouldnt like to attempt it.There isnt much room on these to work as you will findout soon enough.

Something else to check is the camshaft sprocket, one i did recently had come loose and snapped the locating piece off this meant the timing was way out.

Nice one mate, i'll take the crank sensor out and have a check and see if that pin is still there.

Think i would have a go at replacing the pin with the starter out first before diving in and taking the box out!!

Seems to be loads of things that go wrong and stop the spark

Just been out to the garage for another wee look at the car and can see 2 sensors down where the crank sensor is ment to be !!!!

Took the top one out and cant see into the hole to check and see if the pin is on the flywheel or not, went to go and remove the other sensor (which looks to be a bit bigger than the top one and has a biggier housing) and only managed to get the top bolt loosened off Bottom one is stupidy tight and feels like it might round the head so will wait till tomorrow night and use a decent allen socket on it to try and get the bottom bolt out.

you need to take the whole thing off,the sensors are mounted on an aluminium block.

Got the unreal tight last bolt holding the block for the crank sensor out tonight

Good news is that the timing pin in the flywheel is still there

Bad news is that i still am none the wiser as to why i have no spark !!!!!

Yes, go to www.s2central.net look in technical, motronic, and follow the instructions on how to pull the blink codes.

I'd be inclined to ensure all the timing marks are set up correctly before proceeding any further.

If the timing is out, you'll get no spark

Going by what the previous owner told me im not sure if its timing related, he said he parked it up at his house, went to go and move the car a while later and it wouldn't start !!!!

I should maybe just check the timing though, even if just to rule that out !!

Im determined to find the route of this problem !!! Have wanted a coupe for long enough and not going to give up on getting this one back on the road !!!!!

I had an S4 a few months back that i just bought to sell on again as it was seriously cheap ( £300 !! ) and wished i had kept it as soon as i sold it ( i did make £800 on it though so would have been silly to refuse that kind of turnover in less than a week !! )
Makes me all the keener to get this one sorted and keep it !
