One of those crank sensors is a position (flywheel teeth), the other is a reference (single flywheel pin). Check both.

This may be a really stupid question but are you sure the rotar arm timing isn't 180 degrees out? Make sure its sparking on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke! Open the oil filler cap and look at the exhaust camshaft on Cyl 1, you should be able to work out if the valve is open or not.

I would be inclined to change the entire dizzy for another you are sure works as hall sendors have a habbit of working when you test them, then failing when the engine rocks around on cranking.

Previous owners have a spectacular skill for lying and/or stupidity, so don't rule out timing or anything else on the basis of what he/she says.

Good luck and let us know what the problem was WHEN you find it!!!

Also forgot to mention, i have seen dizzy caps and rotor arms go from working fine then not working at all in a space of 10 minutes. Change for new items if you haven't already.

      Cheers.

Go back to page 1 of this thread, and my suggestion with an LED costing pence across the pins of the hall effect sensor - see if that is giving a signal when you crank the engine.

Have you checked all the ECU fuses ?

Right peeps !! Tonight i tried a noid light across the pins of the distributor and also the coil and got nothing from either of them Although im getting battery voltage at both

Never actually thought about checking the fuses yet

Managed to change over the ignition switch so now i can crank it off the key rather than hot wiring it through the back of the plug !!!! Not a nice job changing the ignition switch is it !!!!!

I dont have any form of spark mate so rules out the rotor arm being 180 degrees out i would have thought !

I did think about trying another dizzy as few people i have spoken to about this have said its more than likely to be the dizzy !!! Am kind of reluctant to buy one though without having some sort of proof that its actually at fault ( unless someone has one they can lend me to try )

Would using the noid light have the same effect ???? Have tried one on the dizzy and the coil and got nothing !!!!!

Make sure you check the 2 fuses under the red plastic lid in the fuse box, they are marked 'motor'.What have you done about checking the codes?

If its 180 degs out you won't get a spark i don't think.... ecu is too clever for that

Yeah mate i ordered the cable with it ( i think !!!! )

I have the modified gear for the distributor as got one with the car so im interested in the dizzy you have, how much you after for it as might be handy to keep as a spare even if its not that thats actually wrong with the car !! Plan on keeping the car for a while so some spares will come in handy im sure.

Have hopefully made some progress on the possible fault !!!!

Got the cable from ebay in the post today so plugged that into the VAGCOM and got fault code 00512 - Camshaft position ( hall ) sensor not at reference mark. Static - Mechanical malfunction.

Is this proof enough that i need a distributor ( i take it the hall sensor is integrated in the dizzy ?? ) ????

I think if the hall sensor is knackered it gives the code 00512-signal error, may be wrong.Have you checked the timing yet?(cant remember if you have mentioned it in this thread or not!).To me it sounds like it could be the rotor arm isnt aligned with the body at tdc.
That dizzy will be with you on wednesday btw.

Not checked the timing yet, is the hall sensor in the dizzy then or is it a seperate cam sensor ???

Think if i take the covers off to check the timing i might as well change the belt while im in there, never done one of these before, are they straight forward enough to change as have heard some horror stories about getting the crank pulley bolt off !!!!
