You don't need the thing if your car is moving

Only in standing traffic have I noticed a difference where the increased surface area helping with no airflow.

ok did not know that do the RS2 water pump and cambelt fit onto a ABY without any mods, i take it pully on the pump is smaller that why belt is not the same and spin faster?
Do you have a part number for pump and belt?

Removing the thermostat will cause the flow to become too fast, decreasing heat transfer at the radiator, thus increasing temps.

        According to my ETKA:

        Waterpump:
        b 034 121 004 b

        timing belt:
        b 034 109 119 C

If you got AC(blocking flowto main radiator) and high hp you need it if used at trackdays. For everyday use it's OK to remove it. (I had to make a custom aux rad about 3-4times the org size to keep temp down at trackdays )

If your going for light weight then the aircon would have be one of the first things on my list to get shot of, it's weight at the front and thats where it least needed. Also getting rid of the aircon rad vastly improves the efficiency of the main rad meaning the aux rad is redundant, in our clime's anyway.

If you cambelt needs changing soon then no harm in going for the RS2 pump and belt as they can only do good. However if your belt is relativity new then I wouldn't both ripping it all apart just to that job. I'd wait till it was cambelt change time, every 50k or 5 years is my general rule; But if your having the bottom end apart to rods ect, which I suspect you are, then you may as well do it then as well as a cam belt change. Next time mines apart is going to get the RS2 pump and belt.

I have removed the AC and fitted an RS2 pump and belt. I'm going to get a price on some alloy main and aux rads soon.

keep it... it always can help the main rad. Unless you got an aftermarket and bigger radiator with a nice fan behind it. cheers!

It was 36 deg c the other day and i gave the S2 a fair flogging, oil temp got to 100 after about 20 minutes of caining, water temp sat at 92-94. I have no aux rad.

I have kept mine on and thank God...

Sitting in city traffic in the midwestern parts of the States in the dead of Summer with the AC going full blast will tax the cooling system to the ultimate!!
Without the aux. radiator my motor would have been toast a long time ago.
I'm changing my radiator now because of the typical BEHR failure...cracked upper left side.
Can I use a UR-Quattro radiator in my CQ? Were they all metal?

It actually doesn't in moving situations as the rad is in parallel it actually in my opinion decreases the cooling potential as it's not as effective as the main rad due to the smaller surface area.

Yep, that's why the RS2 cam-belt is different.
