Audi's translations are sometimes wonderful. They translated "lockable rear differential" as "limited slip differential" for the MB ur-quattro and dozens of people believed it for years.

I don't see how a bolt that's been undone can possibly 'know' what's happened to the rest of the engine. I've always regarded these bolts as single-use. If they're carelessly put together - wound in almost all the way on one side before the other - there can be a bending torque that should be avoided.

It's a fact that most of the stuff we're working with is old and in many cases we have no real idea of its previous treatment. Who would think of stripping an engine they'd just bought purely to replace the big end bolts?

This thread is a perfect reminder of why you should have your car properly mapped before giving it the beans...
And actually, I think the engine should have been pulled apart when MRC saw it's not making power. I am now almost completely sure one or more rods were bent at that point...
It saddens me to see the price paid for that lesson. I hope you get a new motor running properly, so you can enjoy your car after all the grief.

It did make some power a little over 320bhp but it could not make enough tourqe to go with it. At the time they seem to think it was a problem with the cams possibly being bad from the factory,so I was on the lookout for another set to try out.
The car seemed to run ok,just abit down on the power they thought it should make,
definatly did not see any reason to take the engine out and check at the time, but would'nt hind sight be a wonderful thing.

Here here, easy say they should have taken the engine out, unless they built the engine in the 1st place there would be no cause to do so unless the owner requested it.

Let me make things very clear as far as MRC are concerned,I do not in any way place any blame what so ever at the door of MRC.
From the first meeting with Doug and Minhae they did everything they could, after hearing about my problems with the blown turbo ect.
This is including working till 11.30pm on the first attempt.they have been first class all the way through. They took the exhaust of and ran it on the dino to see if it was a restriction, then welded it back up without the sports cat, took the cam cover of to check the cam timeing, checked the dissy alignment, etc, etc, not easy jobs, but they continude to try, both on the first rr and the second.
And when I eventually rebuild this engine they will be my first port of call.

Don't get me wrong, I am not blaming MRC at all.
If a car had a "high boost issue", and then is not making power, I'd personally recommend the owner to take it apart. Hindsight is a beautiful thing indeed though...
That's why I said - I hope you get a new motor and can enjoy your car.
Probably will need a remap though, but I am sure MRC can sort that perfectly.

More greaf, it would appear on closer inspection the doner engine dispite its history is not good, thats pissed up my planes of a quick engine swop.So I have desided to rebuild the bottom end and I am going to install new uprated rods and bearings,I do not want this to happen again.Aronmatic has some good looking rods for sale, any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Pete has lower gasket kits for sale at QC which would be a good idea.

For arons rods, they come with the little end bush, so you will just need big end bearings (think I listed the KS numbers lately). They will have ARP bolts and grease. Remember to check clearances with plastigauge.

                        Whats up with the engine?

Madpugger, thanks for the advise ,much appreciated.I have the big end and main shells they where hard to find as they are both oversize, unfortunatly on stripping the engine it was clear that the crank was worn and needed grinding.bores also realy need a rebore, and as I am going rs2 again its not worth doing any less.
I would like to get it balanced, but I have no idea of the cost or where I could get it done in this area.

Send it to AGRA in Dundee, they made a mandrel for me to do mine, and said they had spent a couple hours doing so for free. They tried to give it to me for free too but I told them to keep it and I would send folk their way with I5s...

Wherever you send it, you will need to send the clutch, FW, Crank and Pulley/Harmonic balancer. Make sure it is in good shape.

If it needs ground remember your bearings will be no use The KS and Glyco come in standard and under sizes (maybe they are called oversize, but to me pistons go oversize and cranks get ground to undersize...). Agra will supply shells and rings if you need.

                                Hope that helps
