    Coilpacks on the 3B

Can you fit separate coilpacks to a 3B without changing the ECU to AAN or ABY and remapping?

    i think that no¡¡

you have to do pin swap + ABY/ADU/AAN Motronic

OR swap the full engine harness..but this is a waste of time i think

No. You would need an AAN or ABY ECU plus the associated OE harness. Then you would need a coilpack harness from the two No. 14 4-pin connectors and two of the No. 12 connectors (12v power for the coils) to the five coilpacks. Can be done but it would be a lot of work.

You need one of these, and an ABY ECU:-

This is what I'm using on mine to convert to coil packs, the same as Rocco used to convert his 3B too.

Right, so I need one of those ebay coil pack kits, a pin swap diagram and an ABY ECU (which I already have) and I'd have to have it remapped again

There are instructions available for the installation of the 3B to 1.8t coil pack conversion harness and swapping of the pins in the ECU connector:

Or you could use 034ms high output coil kit. I have been using that for a couple of years now on my converted 3b.

In principal you could build a black box that uses the signal sent to the 3b coil. This box would then need to send trigger signal to each coil and it would need to keep track of firing order.

I remember talking with Paul about this years ago maybe he has made brewed something up.

                  John,

You wouldn't need to remap as it would work at whatever the ecu was set up for. So if you would be satisfied with stock ABY power....AH! In your case it would be a re-map!
Not sure what the coils retail at, but you could certaintly canibialise say an AAN loom for all the associated wiring. That would save a few quid although you would have at least 15 year old wiring.
Neatest install is of course the ABY loom but same problem of elderly wiring.

Interesting chaps, thanks for the input. I really think this is the next thing to do to the old girl, I guess a remap would be worth it anyway as its not been done since I fitted the full Wagner kit and I bet it would take a bit more timing and will surge less now too.

Since you posted this on your thread Andy I've been on eBay.de hunting for this kit.. no luck yet but will keep looking. Bit confused with photo 6 in the listing he shows the coils on a aby rocker cover? is he saying that the coils are compatible with both 3b and aby cover, just that I'm going RS2 IM and the 3b rocker clashes with the RS2 IM.

IMO it is a waste of time changing to ABY or AAN loom, much easier just to swap the pins in the ECU plug.

Try sending him a msg via the link, I'm sure he'll make you one evenif he hasn't got one listed. If you read the instructions on post #7 you will see that they will fit with the 3B cam cover but it needs modifying. This is what I'm going to be doing.

And you don't really need the 3b cam cover for nothing.I don't use it and with the coils looks much better IMHO

I guess I'll need to fit the cam sensor or use the hall in the dizzy?

Rocco, which did you do? Did you fit a7A rocker cover then? Or just leave the plastic lead cover off? Any pics?
