I will investigate this some more and if it's possible, get it done through work...
its the not knowing the cross section of the rod to see if there is anything un-toward stopping this from getting done...
No, the oil does not pass through the crank to the mains the oil comes from the mains from the main bearing oil feed in the block, the hole in the crank main journal passes oil through the crank to the hole in the big end journal to feed the big end bearing and then through the hole in your con rod to the little end (if you have a hole).
so to an idiot, me, it is flowing away from the crank, to the ends and back to the sump
/next zone needing lubrication...
I know this is a massive over simplification but why cant you remove the cap, clamp the rod and just drill a hole right through?
I also agree audi would not have wasted money if it was not necessary, or at least strongly question why they put it there. However 100k on rods without it shows it will do 100k on that engine
I'm sure I know a company in Sheffield that will be able to do this. If somebody could confirm the size of the hole I'll take a rod in and see what sort of cost we'd be looking at

I wonder if they got rid of it on performance rods to lower the chances of a loss of oil pressure?
And i would imagine to drill the blank rods they would have to be micrometer perfect as it would make a difference to the balance I the rod.
Also the jet from the oil squirters will be a constant 4 to 5 bar pressure jet washing the underside of the piston, I am 100% sure that would be adequate enough.
