    Broken spark plug F5DPOR

Hi people this is what happened to my plug last bank holiday Monday while doing some runs down the drag strip at York.

This happened on my 5th run, I've not had time to look into the engine or turbo but I have fingers crossed that its all ok.

The plugs are a few years old but have very low mileage on them, I'm going to try some NGK BKR8EIX plugs next which are a heat range colder than the Bosch.

OUCH! Did you shut the engine off in time? Hate to think what could have happened if you were doing high speed runs when this happened

What indication did you get that something happened? What type of noise?

The plug came apart when I set off, because I had a helmet on I didn't realise it was misfiring and finished the quarter in 11.1 sec . Also the car idled and drove fine off boost so it drove 50 miles home without any problems.

I'll take the turbine housing off to inspect that but a borescope may save me taking the head off (although it's not a big job on this car).

did you not read recent posts on s2 forum ,on how crap the f5dpor is , its been made differently for the last 2 to 3 years and not safe to use . if you have forge pistons they will now have some damage but it may not be to bad , we had same thing happen but didnt strip the engine to find damage until 5 years later , one piston had a lot of pitting

No, but I wish I had.

Have you ever tried to gap the plugs or drop it into the head when you were mounting it?

My idea is that...is spark eroded...
something wrong with the plug at origin and this is the end result.
I think the engine is fine... dosint look like it was broken..anyhow, the welded portion is still there...
                Just my iddea
                Goodluck!

Fingers crossed no damage done! I use the NGK's but the 9's. Not had any problems with them so far in 2 years of use.

Seen this multiple times now. AVOID these plugs.

I believe that the standard equivalent to the Bosch F5DPOR is the NGK BKR7EIX.

That's what I'm using anyway (gapped to 0.5mm), and they've been fine for all types of driving for the last few thousand miles

Sorry to see this Baz. Hopefully the electrode hasn't caused any damage.

I bet it burnt away rather than breaking off. Hopefully no damage and a good reason to try the NGK's.

It's a clean break with sharp edge.

I would seriously consider changing to NGK if you have some of these in your engine.
