My car spent the day over at my VAG mechanics garage. He confirmed my hub (he called it the flange) is the issue.
Anyone have a spare for sale?
Part number 8A0501653A
I think it's specific to the Avant.

Slightly better news from my VAG mechanic. He said the ribbed belt was too loose, causing the screeching. Apparently that type of belt should be very tight. I didn't know that
And, the wobble on the harmonic damper is normal and nothing to worry about

I guess it is sort of good news on the hub as well - at least you know where the wobble is. It's surprising how it can still have play despite needing to be pressed in!

The hub went in too easily which gave the game away.

Ok, wasn’t getting any offers of a hub so I ordered a new reproduction hub from Autewo in Germany. TPS have them but they are over £315 plus vat each!
The one from Autewo will be £150. Hope it works.
I also acquired a new toy
Now I can do the bearings on the car.
It’s an impressive bit of kit and has the correct size bushings for the S2 hubs.

That is an impressive looking bit of kit. Excuse my ignorance as I've not seen the likes before but, does this mean you can do bearings without a hydraulic press or is it a kit of press bushes? I see threaded rods which makes me think these might be for drawing the bearing in...

It removes the old bearing and puts the new one in. The big advantage is that you don't need to remove the hub carrier and the alignment isn't touched.

Yup, cracking kit, there is a video on your tube showing how it is used, saw it maybe a year ago now, think it may have been on a golf , but all the same
They work ok on a freshly installed bearing, I wouldn’t fancy your chances on a 10 year old part. Last sticky bearing I changed took 16 tons on the press to shift it.

I was going to say... Almost 17 tons for one of mine when it finally went BANG on the way out...
Honda CBR 1100XX Blackbird Turbo....undergoing major changes.....
S2 Coupe... bit easier off the line...
'03 ZX12-R daily hack.... lots of nice bolt ons...
I think you are both right there.
It was a no brainer not to buy though. My VAG mechanic friend charged me £50 to do the bearing on the car. He said he hadn't used the tool in over 2 years so I asked if he wanted to sell it? He agreed, at £80. Now I don't have to call him back to 're do the bearing when the new hub arrives. I looked online and that tool is £400 + new
