Shame your having to pull the engine out but think it the right decision. Bet it's been on minimal oil pressure for some time and don't think the engine bearings and the rest of the internals would like that. There is one AEB engine on ebay at the moment for best offer. There are also a couple of TQS's being broken at the moment.

Good god. Were they running without an air filter?

That's the same as I encountered with the one I was driving, I would imagine the head is also totaled from oil starvation, hence the paste in the sump.

I can only see black plastic particles in the filter.

That pick up had so much crap in it I'm surprised anything made to the filter.

In seriousness you really need to find the source of that alloy paste, cam's and lifters out next see how they look, it maybe the oil way to one journal got blocked, until it's apart you won't know. As I said in my text it could also be white metal from the main bearing shells but if I had to guess I'd say it's from the head. Good luck, you never know it might be saveable.

I've had a thought this morning regarding the source of the alloy paste in your sump... If the cam chain tensioner was do nothing, then the chain may have been slack enough to flap about and contact the head producing the debris. Meaning the engine could well be worth rebuilding, I'd have a really good look in that area as soon as the cams are out of the way.

That's a very good point Kit. The housing around the chain displays signs of exactly this. Did some reading up last night and now have a p!an. Last exhaust camshaft cap at front of engine is the last point oil reaches and the one to check first.

Yep, that's right regarding the cam caps, the exhaust one's are also subject to more heat so it's always that shaft that makes contact first, any damage will be fairly obvious under decent light. Take a couple of photo's so you can be sure of their locations and lay them and all the lifters out systematically on a clean work surface.

I'd be inclined to fit new lifters as their not that expensive but if their not damaged then there's no real need to, they must however go back where they came from.

Hopefully the cam chain making contact is the only source of metal debris.

There is some fine scoring but it's not excessive. My fingernail isn't catching in the scoring and apparently that's the quick test. Still feels fairly smooth.

And you can see where the chain has worn this away somewhat.

It's very hard to tell from a photo but that looks okay, not perfect but not trashed either, the cam journal doesn't appear to have gotten to hot, they were blue on the one that failed on me and the caps were absolutely destroyed.

The finger nail test is indeed the way to do a quick check, or you can try very lightly pulling the nose of a 0.25mm feeler gauge over the surface and see if it seems to be picking up.

Well that cam chain contact would explain the alloy paste, it's amazing how resilient engines are.

I've rebuilt so many PD engines I've lost count and some of the damage I've seen with them is way worse than a bit of alloy paste and some very light scoring. I don't know if your aware but the 150BHP models in-particular suffer from the cam lobes making contact with the lifters, normally on cylinder four. The worst ones I've repaired have worn completely through the tops of a couple of the lifters and the cam lobes are gone which obviously means the head is full of steel particles which I've fished out with a magnet. Their a slightly different kettle of fish as the cams run in shells in the head and to repair one you replace all the moving parts but the bottom ends and head castings have always survived, I do take the sumps off to clean them out and check.
