  • Today was a lovely sunny windy day. Perfect for seat shampooing.

My drivers seat base is quite rough. A kind forum member sold me a good passenger seat. It needs a clean!

Came up well with a shampoo and leather feed.

This is the current drivers side.

There is a hole in the leather and the cushion has collapsed.
The rest came up very nicely.

So I set about dismantling the spare seat to see if the base foam and material could be swapped.

Apart from the holes cut in the leather to accommodate the wires, we are looking good. These won't be obvious as they will be next to the central consul.

Now I need to remove the seat from the car and swap them over.

    • You may have noticed that she is sitting on Avus alloys. The Boleros have gone off for refurbishing.

        • Starting to look good Dave, what is the plan for the car?

          • Not sure yet. The more I work on her the more I like her.

Anyway, took a bit longer than I thought but got the seat base swapped.

I had to do a deep clean while the seat was out.

And hoover under the rear seat.

Just got a few bits of trim to replace then I'm done.

            • Wheels are back from blasting and powder coat. I went straight to the tyre place to get new tyres fitted. Called at my friendly engineering place and they are making me 4 new wheel caps in aluminium.

These look great. Always loved them on both B5s and C4s, really fancy the correct 8J versions for the S4.

                    • My local engineering guy made me some new caps.

I just need to work out how to get the rings on them. Maybe stickers? Not sure yet. However, they look pretty cool plain.

Those look fantastic. Buy cheap Audi centre caps (eBay item 155072006741) and remove the rings then glue on your new caps?

                        • This little project has been waiting patiently whilst I finished the Ur, serviced and fixed our B5 tdi Passat, serviced the boys polo and serviced and fixed the wife's Passat. Phew! I have been busy.
So, the ramp is free and on she goes for rear wheel bearing. If you remember from before, I had to abort this job as I found someone had rounded out the hub bolt. Nice!

                          Cleaned up ready for welding.

                          You get the idea.
                          Worked a treat.

Now the seal on this side of the diff has been leaking for some time. I removed the whole driveshaft and sprayed everything with solvent to clean it up.

I've drained the diff and the oil looks like it's original. So far the fill plug won't budge. Nervous grin. I can alway fill via the drive shaft hole as I'm changing the seal. Don't really dance welding something in the fill plug here as it's right next to the plastic petrol tank.

So, on to wheel bearing. It's proving to be rather stubborn.

                          My tool won't budge it.
So I welded a bead inside. Still no budge. So I decided to remove the hub carrier. Abs sensor is seized. Cry.
Don't we love working on these old rusty wrecks.

                          • I'm surprised that outer race stayed stuck after the bead of weld they normally pretty much fall out then, needs to come off then go in a press you may end up destroying the ABS sender but it that's what it takes then so be it.

                            • So this morning with fresh head I thought I would have one more go before I destroy my abs sensor.
And it came right out. Strange.

And new one went in nicely.

This is the best £50 I ever spent.

So the driveshaft flange came out no problem.

But pouring oil into the opening proved not to be an option. There are bearings in the way and it just runs straight out.
So I had to get brave with the fill plug.
I tried hammering in a star socket but it just rounded out.
So, with some fire safety precautions in place, I went for it.

Once the bolt was welded it was just hand tight. I've used this method a few times and it's never failed. I think it's the extreme sudden heat that does the trick.

Now I can get on putting the new seal in and re filling with EP90 oil.
