Looks a bit dirty in the cam cover. Might be worth putting an engine flush through when its all back together

Is it safe to flush one of these engines? What flush would you recommend? What's caused that sludge buildup do you think? Wrong oil? Not changed regularly? I've done some googling but not a lot of help.

I can just feel a little roughness on a couple of cam lobe tips with my fingernail and I'm not sure if this is acceptable, the cams are real pointy on these things! This whole cam chain-tensioner-oil sludge thing is worrying me!

On the plus side the Bilstein/Eibach B12 kit is fitted and the shocks have little Nurburgring stickers on them

Doesn't the RS4 suffer from chocolate cams? Jas11n had a similar issue I believe....

The picture I've built up of this issue is that you can get age related (not necessarily milage related) wear of the cam chain tensioner blocks, the debris from the blocks clogs the pickup and starves the cams of oil causing the cams to fail. I've no idea if this is the full story though, I've also heard reports of poor quality cams. The tensioner block in the pic has a visible groove but its only a fraction of a mm deep but I've yet to look at the other block. Apart from a tiny bit of ridging on a couple of the lobe tips the cams look perfect.

The sludge on the cam cover would probably be due to the longlife service intervals. Wash it in some Traffic Film Remover and get as much off as you can. The cam chain tensioner blocks can be purchased separately.... just cant remember where...! ask on SRS some will point you in the right direction.

Worth replacing when you have it apart. As for the cams just keep and eye on them, how do the cam followers look? the face of those will also give you an indication of a problem.

Newsh have you taken it apart due to a problem or just to check the cams?
