My 044 has some kinda high pitch noise, but it has been like that from day one.

Same here from new, and actually glad to know I'm not the only one (!).. although I've also noticed on extremely hot days it does begin to sound a little unnerving in tone, like it's struggling a bit :-O

when hot it does sound a bit louder in mine as well. Maybe it would be a good idea to have a fuel tank radiator!! hehe

Its worth checking the pump hasnt slid out of the basket and is touching the outside of the tank

                            rs2 pump fitting

i have just finished fitting bosch 0580 254 040 pump which is the same as spec as 044
part numbers for 60mm reservoir 895201779h and strainer 895201531a.
my fuel pump is very quiet at the moment but i am still trying to find a banjo bolt for pump to fit original banjo pipework in tank

I am trying to fit a 044 into my coupe, however it is a 94 2.6e originally anyway and not an S2. The problem I am having is that I can't find any cover on top of the tank, can someone tell me how I access the fuel pump on this tank?

                              Thanks.

Sounds like you need to take off the tank cover (the ridged cover under the boot floor carpet) . First remove the boot floor carpet.
Then peel the carpet flap that is glued across the rear of the tank cover and you will see several bolts. Undo and remove the cover. Done.
