Ahh good point - there are some ratio variants across 01A but I also agree that it is not well suited to the big V8 engine... 01E is the way to go, then decide if you want open/lockable rear diff or torsen variety.

    • i will have to check up that, if it works, then it will be an how-to

all diesel cars with 01E has this? did the 80q come with diesel?

One thing i've learned we are way behind the Scandinavians!

      • NO - not all diesel 01E - just some - usually later ones on V6 TDi... Let me see if I can dig up some good codes. There are some super long gears on some diesel boxes if you like low revs for cruising or increase your theoretical Vmax (horsepower permitting).

          • The V8 100 S4/S6 and S6+ have the oil cooler on the gearbox - codes CMG and DGU
            Both are 4.11 F/R

Ratios slightly different though according to my info

            CMG-1 is 28/8 = 3.5
            CMG-2 is 34/18 = 1.889
            CMG-3 is 32/26 = 1.231
            CMG-4 is 29/30 = 0.967
            CMG-5 is 29/36 = 0.806
            CMG-6 is 26/38 = 0.684

            DGU-1 is 28/8 = 3.5
            DGU-2 is 34/18 = 1.889
            DGU-3 is 33/25 = 1.320
            DGU-4 is 30/29 = 1.034
            DGU-5 is 30/35 = 0.857
            DGU-6 is 27/37 = 0.730

            • I will try to scan a few relevant pages from manual showing the pipes and how they attach to gearbox housing - the oil pump seems to be neatly installed in the casing somehow.

                  • Here goes - PDF attached - cooler pipes seem to attach housing near the right driveshaft.

                        • Hi guys,

Thanks for the help, I did notice the gearing was very low on my car, presumably as it had such a low amount of power as standard, like I said I am up for building a fast road car, not a track weapon, been there done that, so what gearbox would you recommend? I do want to use the car as much as possible once its finished, like I say its a good 2-3 year project but want to finish it to a high level so it look like its rolled out of the factory, a completely different approach to my usual project cars which are held together with duck tape and cable ties!

                          Thanks for the help

                          • Hi,

I buyed a V8 rear diff (torsen), and I have a doubt. Is needed to use the non toothed driveshaft flange of my s2 with a v8 driveshaft flange? Isn't possible use the originals S2 driveshaft flanges?

The problem is that I can't find any V8 driveshaft flange! Is possible use 2 non toothed driveshaft flanges of other S2 with 2 S2 O-rings?

It's possible do the final ratio of ours 01E too short? For example, 200km/h at 7200rpm?

                            Thanks

It is possible to use both original flanges and not change any of the O-rings, you just have to take off 5mm from the torsen differential, original diffs toothed point (where is the locking system) is 20 mm, torsen differential is at the same point non toothed and 25mm, that 5mm stops the S2 flange to go in as far as it supposed to go. Another thing is that you need longer flange bolts (about 15mm longer) because V8 flanges are longer than the S2 flanges.
Also I discovered that V8 flanges are from much softer material than S2 flanges... I tried to use original bolts and tried to drill the bolt holes. First I tried to drill V8 broken flange, it was very easy to drill it, but when I started to drill S2 flange, it just did not go in, nothing happened
Now I´m trying to find longer bolts and put the diff back to the car.

01E with diesel and oil cooler were on the higher power versions and all were 3.89 final drive. The 2.5 with 180hp
The oil pump can not be installed in a gearbox that did not come with one, the case is completely different.
The non oil pump 01E were 4.11 final drive, those were the 1.9 TDI quattro and 2.5 TDI with 150hp.

                                Hope this helps.
