    Hi Alex

Considering i used the V8 rear torsen in my RS2 case.

I found an how to in here:http://forums.eurocca.net/showthread.php?t=13402

I was like you thinking about putting back one of the shafts (well just one because the other one does'nt even reach the gear on the diff)from the RS2 diff into the V8 Torsen but......
    It's seems ok but.......It's short!
It engages (plugs in) on it's side just for 15/20mm...... that's not enough!
I used both shafts from the V8 Torsen diff.

It sounds a bit stupid i know... but if you try one on you'll notice by looking from the other side what i mean.

Here pictures and part Nos of the time i did it:http://www.audisportclub.com/forum/s...p?t=156&page=3

    Good work!

Does anyone know if I can do the V8 swap to S4 B5 rear differential? Does it fit there?

        Hi chaps,

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have a few questions, for the record I am building a V8 supercharged Coupe, its based around a 1989 10V coupe, I reckon its a 2-3 year project for me (I don't have much spare time!) so am not in a major rush for info!

I have spent a long time around modified japanese cars and have a masters in engineering so am not a complete muppet but am reasonably new to Audi's, I have also bought myself a1998 A8 4.2 V8 to strip for parts, is the diff out of this in anyway usable in the diff in my old coupe?

Also has anyone got any feedback on the effects of this mod? I think it was Audiman that said it made the car unstable? I definitely prefer an oversteery car having an MR2 turbo track car for many years but the Audi is definitely a fast road car only.

I am also a little confused at the naming convention for 5sp, 6sp gearboxes and different engine naming conventions (CQ) etc, so if anyone can clarify that would be great.

        Thanks for the help

        Simon

íf it is an quattro then yes, the s2 and cq has same diffs...

correct me if im wrong anyone!

the diff will send most power to the wheel with MOST traction ( reversed to yours atm)

i am going to do this also, but you can NOT do any second gear launchcontrol launches, the diff breaks aroud 500bhp for the people here in sweden..

One thing i've learned we are way behind the Scandinavians!

Thanks, so the CQ is every 4wd coupe thats not an S2?!

I'm not planning on doing full bore launches either, like I say i'm building a fast road car primarily, had the 300bhp/ton stripped out track car and it hardly got used so fancy building something usable!

            Sorry for the ignorance!

thats about right, the coupe quattro shares the same diff housing as s2 coupe ( dont know about s2 sedan, does it have b4 or b5 axle anyone? )

You have an open rear differential on the A8 not a Torsen so I believe it's pretty useless for your project.
You need a "V8" not an A8 for the rear Torsen it was fitted by Audi just on that model.

                  Feedback:

If you don't run extremely high power the rear Torsen it's a fantastic upgrade IMHO the car (RS2) does oversteer a lot if you want to.

Ah fair enough then, thanks for that, its a 'Sport' model, don't know if that makes a difference, probably not!

                    thanks

The rear diff from that A8 will be an ordinary open diff - NOT torsen (like Audi V8) and NOT lockable (like Audi CQ and S2).

The gearbox coding is a bit confusing - Audi was never the best at logical numbering systems in the past. There are a few systems of note.

Typ 016 - dates back to 1980s with UR. Very earliest has lockable centre and rear. From about 1987 the centre diff became Torsen. These boxes are nearly always 4.11 F/R but some oddballs exist. Gear spacing is often odd on them too. 5-speed variants only. A very strong gearbox - capable of taking much more abuse than factory power levels.

Typ 01A - late 1980s and 1990s saw this one - not as strong as 016. Used on CQ and 3B engined S2 models. Also seen on some Audi A4 applications. Again 5-speed options only. Better gear spacing, just not as robust. Torsen centre. Lockable rear.

Typ 01E - mid 1990s onwards - stronger than 01A. 5 and 6 speed options available - depoloyed on S2/RS2 and many other Audi 100/A6/A8 with lots of different ratio types. Later ones on diesels have oil coolers. Watch for some funny F/R ratios. 4.11 is the most common though. Gearchange on these is not as fast as 01A but it 'feels' better in my personal view. The 01A gearshift is a bit floppy for me - but it is lighter & faster.

HTH - quite a big learning curve you have there. Happy to help here if we can...

s2central, has the 01e diesel oil coolers? this is what im looking for, do you think it will bolt straight up on my 01e gearbox?

Edit: only mount up the oilcooler-parts of course, not the gearbox

worth noting that the 01A in the S2 and CQ have different ratios - the S2 01A box is longer geared - IMHO neither would be suitable for a torquey V8

I'm not the expert on this one, but I think its only suitable for gearboxes with the pump mechanism to force oil thru the cooler. I really don't know if the pump can be fitted on ordinary 01E box - the casing and such may be different.
