how about a possible flawed lifter on that area?

Lifters have been replaced 20.000km ago, and they noise only gets worse the hotter the engine gets. It also doesn't really sound as crisp as a lifter does.
But since the noise isnt to be heard at rpm above 2000rpm, the doubt really grows on where it comes from
With a bottom end problem the noise would only get worse with higher revs we think... but it doesn't.
thanks for thinking with me

might be worth replacing them yes, you never know
standing above the engine, you would say it's in the cylinder head.
Standing under the car, you would say bottom end
Stethoscope on a bottom piece of the cylinder head, and you can't hear it. Move the scope 1 cm just onto the intake manifold, and there is the noise much clearer again.Comment

Little update.
The oil was renewed just as a test. Noise remains... but! Now it has 10w40 instead of 5w40, and my oilpressures have gone up a lot!
With the 5w40 I got 5 bar on cold start up, 1.5 bar with a warm engine (1.3 when rally warmed up), and around 4 bar at 2000rpm when warm.
With the 10w40 I now have off scale 6.5(?) bar at coldstart, when oil on 90° a steady 2 bar at idle (even after giving it some stick), but also near 6bar when driving it normally around 2500rpm or so.
I thought the 40 stands for the high temp viscosity? How come I now have such very high pressures. Isn't dangerous or so?
Have been driving it another 60 miles or so, and ofcourse while driving you don't notice a single bit of the rattle when the revs drop from 2000rpm to idle since you are always above that rev range. It really sounds perfect on all rev ranges. If it were a bottom end bearing it would have gotten a lot worse over the last 200 miles I think.
Our guess is now going strongly to the oilpump. It was stuck after I gave it a wash before mounting it back in. My mechanic then took it apart, and found some little bearings-parts in it. At a quick glimpse no real damage was to be seen, so it went back together, and it spun freely. But it might have gotten a crack now, causing that rattle at decellerating low revs!Last edited by Avantus; 22 January 2011, 09:36.Comment

I would not have thought that just going from a 5W40 to a 10W40 would have made that much difference to your pressure. Also, according to the 3B factory manual, the oil pressure relief valve should open at 6bar. I've never heard of anybody getting 6bar at 2500rpm, should be more like 3-4bar. I'd check the relief valve and make sure it's not sticking. Did you use a new oil pump?sigpic

On double checking the manual it actually says 6-6.5bar, but like I said this is for a 3B, maybe the RS2 is different.
It's still an easy job to take out the oil temp sender and make sure the piston slides up and down with out sticking.sigpic

Very strange, since last night the pressures were a bit lower than those very high figures. About 0.5 bar lower at cold temperatures, and when warm it was at 1.7 bar instead of 2.0.
Maybe worth checking the piston of the sender, and it also makes the possibility that the rattle comes from the oilpump a bit more plausible.
Did some 250km last 2 evenings, and it still remains about the same, and I havn't been driving it slowly...Comment

My 3" from BFR is on, and I'm loving it!
Custom decat section which together with the rest of the system really seems to have transformed the car. Great sound, but also a very supple engine now, with imo some extra bit on the higher revs.
Top work those guys at BFR, I can tell why so many MRC customers drive with their systems.

Quick question for you guys... if I would want to change (and upgrade) my fuelpump, what type is the one I can replace without modifications?
Is this one a direct easy fit?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bosch-Motorspo...item563f640d14
I see small and thick pumps, which one does an RS2 have
And should my car be remapped if I put in a 5bar pump? Or will it only benifit from not approaching a possible bit leaner mixture at high revs? (I have the 1.9bar high boost chip from Paul).
It all runs perfect now, but since I've been at the side of the road with a broken fuel pump with a previous car, I don't want to have the same thing with this one
It's done 130.000 miles now, so a fresh and more performant one might not be a bad option...
Thanks guys!

if you are only on a remap, changing to the 044 is no improvement. You will also get more noise from it. however if you are considering a bigger turbo, and more than 450hp then that is the way to go and you will also need the proper basket to fit it. I think there is a sticky somewhereComment
