  • Blimey the flywheel looks like new!
Is that what’s left of the pin there?

    • Andy P said..

“Think I may have found the cause of the broken pin too. One of the 2 sump bolts that screw into the RMS housing was missing, so I assume if fell out and took out the pin. So these have both been replaced and loctited in.”

      • What he said what else would knock the pin off?

Might be worth having a rummage in the bell housing to see if there is a bolt lying in there. If there is and its not recovered, it could bounce round in service and do it again

I bought an inspection camera from aldi a while ago and it is exactly this sort of scenario it comes into its own. I thought I'd never use it but now it's in the tool kit, it has proven very useful indeed. Worth £40!

        • You will not be able to drill that pin out. No idea what it's made of but a drill won't touch it. Spark erosion is required

          • Time to fabricate a new timing pin and weld it over the top.

            • Sounds like it, that means towing the car, going to beligerantly try drilling it

Then I'll tow the car and make a new pin

newsh , do you know what's meant by the RMS housing? I will certainly be having a look in there as best I can, but I forget, is there a removable inspection panel that will help me get in there?

              • Oh, rear main seal?

Sheesh, I don't want to have to take the gearbox out if I can help it....

                • If you can turn the front pulley, there are 2 holes in the bottom of the gearbox housing that allows access to these two bolts - the flywheel grooves need to line up with the holes. Once lined up, you should be able to shine a light in to see if the bolts are there.

I had this on the S2 project and I also had it previously on my 90q 20v. It's usually one or both of these bolts have come out

                  • Ah those two, had to get them out when doing from crank seal and oil pump (so sump off....).

Thanks very much Mike, I will definitely take a good look once I get it towed....

                    • Have pre-emptively ordered some M6x65 cap heads in case.

Will try drilling this evening, and then get it towed up to my workshop tomorrow at some point.

                      • They're not the right length for those 2 bolts - should only be 25mm

Oh well, will have to look and see when I get it up on some stands.

You will all be pleased to know my moment of belligerence has now passed, and the pin is definitely too hard to drill out. Hey, I had to try

                          • You're looking at the wrong one. Item 18 is M6x65mm but there are 5 of them fitted when you use this link https://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+co.../1/103-103020/
