Yeah, that's why i ordered the cheap switch on ebay. I COULD get a new oe on ebay, but they were ~$400.... too bad tradition is out of stock, half the price.
Google isn't really helping me here, wondering if any people here have pictures of b4 hoods with vents in them. Somebody flipped the switch to summer over the weekend and suddenly it's 30⁰ out today. I noted yesterday that the hood gets quite warm quite quickly, so as expected, it seems there's a lot of heat being generated. My next task is to get a fan shroud and secondary fan up n running. But given the tight quarters this engine now resides in, i am wondering if hood venting is a good idea as well.
What a world we live in. The seat covers from the storefront that is in toronto just shipped..... from Karachi. They're at heathrow right now, could one of you guys check in on them for me???
Beginning of the fan shroud. I don't have the new electric fan yet but this gives a general idea. Will get the hoop positioned and tacked tomorrow, cuttibg the hole out is gonna be interesting with an angle grinder lol. Gotta find the series resistor and get that all mounted up and electrical sorted too.
Make your line, then cut it just a bit smaller diameter than the line. Then finish it off with a flapdisc to get your final diameter. That way you wont have to be so precise with the death wheel.
The tricky part is done. The hoop is a bit tigher than i would think is ideal at the top though. May just let it self clearance, the fan is definitely as large as it can be and still fit.
Internet shopping strikes again??? It's been a week and my fan order is still "processing".... sigh.
But on the bright side, internet shopping strikes again lol. As we all know, tradition can be hit or miss with these cars. I'd say this was a good hit.
20260525_180513.jpg had to rejig one of the rad mounts to fit them. Looking at the other, i MAY have to tweak the other side too.
Hoping the fan gets here soon so i can get my friend who can tig get some an fittings welded on to various ac bits so i can FINALLY FINISH fabrication and get prepped for painting.....somehow....
Still no friggin fan.... i HATE when web stores say a part is available but then after you pay it says direct from manufacturer and it'll be 3 weeks....
At any rate, i needed to get it mobile again so reassembled it and i can confirm the shroud works cuz the mechanical fan has decent pull from the opposite end of the rad.
So now the last tricky part before i bring it down to the highly recommended body shop 20mins from home for their input and quote. Final ac plumbing. I have been told that AN fittings and PTFE lines are a good way to go which means i basically need a bunch of bungs tig welded on the various bits by a friend who can tig weld, cuz i can't to save my life!
Chinese ebay light switch came today and now the hids work properly with the diode modification. So that's another item off the list.
Rad mounting continues to frustrate. It's just not solid enough now and will not maintain clearance to the fan. Very annoying to be dealing with that again only because i tried to put the fog lights in.... literally about 3mm i need to deal with on it...
I must be getting close to the end if i am throwing money away on engine covers... obviously not fit yet and i will need to trim to clear the master cylinder. Oh and youtube tells me i can mold the line off the expansion tank.... so that'll be an interesting experience to figure out lol
Soooo, i hate work schedules.... it meant i was up at 6am on a saturday.... and no one else in my hlusehold was up before 8
At any rate that meant that before 10 the rad fan was installed and wired and i managed to squeeze the engine covers on. I will need to trim the cover on the left head as it's wedged between the engine and abs bracket though. The best part though is that it does a GREAT job of hiding the majority of the wiring mess lol
i let it run for 20mins and it got nice n hot. Fan works. But it was only 20⁰ at the time (humid as hell though) and it was a solid 5min before it stopped. I think it's the usual problem v8 in a small chassis....airflow through the rad is fine but it just hits the front of a giant v8 4" later.....
I don't think this is gonna be a great commuter car lol. I can see the purchase of a double row core "racing" radiator in my future. This is just a cheapo aftermarket mk4 jetta rad with for the purposes of fitting. The core is a whopping 15mm thick.... i also definitely see some vents being trialed in my spare hood.
I need to trim a few mm of the mechanical fan blades as they juuuuuuat contact the shroud in places every now and again. I also think it will be prudent to add a couple more supports for the lower bumper surround. But after that, the ONLY fabrication is AC work?????
