  • Getting the locking tool on is a pain on the Ur. You need to remove the front rubber bush and there isn't enough room for it to slide off. So you need to remove the mount, which also holds the alternator, which has a seized fitting!
    Hence the ladder. Phew.

The crank bolt wasn't tight at all. Very glad I'm doing this job now.
Got the seized wire fitting off the alternator but the insulation back plate broke in the process.

      • The water pump has no makers marks. Looks ok but new SKF will replace it.
However, idler pulley is an INA.
I happened to have a new replacement (as you do).

        Top pulley keyway is good.

        Now for some cleaning.

Anyone have an old alternator knocking about. I broke the insulator on the connector getting the nut off. It looks like this. No longer available new.

        • The rocker cover took a lot of cleaning.

I decided to paint these parts in epoxy. It's more heat durable. I like Novol protect.

Quite happy with the finish. I'm just a novice when it comes to spraying.

          Topcoat will be satin black.

          • And the great thing about Novol is the top coat goes on after 45 mins while still tacky.

Just in time after the belt arrived.

No, it wasn't running well at all. Timing being out should account for that but was also running very rich. My plan is to go through everything methodically before I run her again and hopefully it will be sorted. I'm finding everything that was apparently done by a so called Quattro garage wasn't done very well at all.

                  • The bottom pulley got separated from the damper.

I have some new 12.9 bolts.

                    Then it got a clean.

My new old stock fte slave arrived.

That's my job for this afternoon.

                    • Old one needed a little persuasion.

I used a length of wood to tap it out.
To fit the new slave I filled it with new brake fluid, bled it and with the rod compressed, fitted a sealed fitting. This holds the rod in and makes it much easier to fit.

The old slave was full of very black fluid. I therefore flushed the pipes from the reservoir with new fluid.

The roll pin was inserted with plenty of copper grease.

                        • Things have been progressing slowly for the past few days as I cut down another very large ash tree that has succumbed to die back. I'm keen to get it all chopped up and stacked before it's too hot to work outside.

And the clutch slave pipe I got from HEL didn't fit. The female end had a concave fitting. I spoke to HEL this morning and they are making me another foc. Their service is excellent.

I did fit a few bits here and their between chopping up logs.

                          • So, back at it properly today.
The damper and sprocket have been renovated. New 12.9 damper bolts.

                            Backplate and water pump on.

Top sprocket re fitted. I used a good helping of thread lock. I had to use a little thread lock on the key as it kept popping out.

Then tighten to 80nm. This is the Bentley manual approved method for locking the sprocket. I was a little sceptical but it worked really well.

Next we need to double check timing is correct. I cut a section of old gasket to replace. The timing mark on the inside of the sprocket need to be level with the top of the gasket.

And bottom end timing using bell housing window.

                            New Gates belt.

Doing a Ur belt is a little fiddly as the belt goes in with the bottom pulley. Cable tie at the top helps.

Then after putting the pulley bolt on (with thread lock as per Bentley manual) hand tight and the slack taken up with the water pump, I turned the engine over a couple of times to make sure timing was good. Then the big boys toys came out to achieve 450nm on the bottom pulley bolt.

Water pump bolts all torqued up and covers re fitted.

Before I re fit the front mount holder and alternator I'm going to do some housekeeping around the turbo and oil filter housing.

                            • This afternoon I fitted the HEL slave pipe which came in the post today.

                              And nearside driveshaft fitted.

                              Coming together now.
