That actually looks like a bomb ?

That's how they got named, as well as what happens if you disconnect it while it's still pressurised..

Steering rods fitted. I needed to out some pressure underneath to stop the ball joint spinning. No allen head on theses.



Before I forgot. Set the dizzy timing mark. It was so far out, I wonder if someone was trying to advance the ignition timing to solve poor running (probably caused by the timing belt being out)?


Then I made a start on the oil cooler. I'm not even going to try and remove the pipes. It will get renovated in one piece.


While that was soaking in oven cleaner I made a start in the injectors. They appear to be original.


This tool is fantastic at removing them.


And now there is some room, the intake got a scrub.

I spent a full day in the garage today.
First of all the oil cooler got a good scrub, ready for paint.

The bomb base got put back together.


Then I moved back to injectors.
The intake was dissembled and cleaned.



Giving access to the air flap.


I then removed the old injectors and placed the feed pipes into bottles.



I wired up a switch direct to the battery so I could run the pump on its own.


Added a couple of gallons of super unleaded.


No leaks under the car which is always a bonus!

I always filter my petrol going in. This is fresh from the Shell filling station.



Then ran the pump and lifted the air flap to flush out the lines. Cylinder four was very grubby.

That's all going in the mower.

Then I fitted the new injectors.


Placed in the bottles and flow tested.


All tested fine with a nice spray pattern and producing equal amounts. Then with the pump still running and the flap down, I tested for any leak down. There was none. We are good so far.
The next test will be to check control pressure. That will be tomorrow now.

May have been some crud from the bottom of the cans? I do blow them out with the air gun when empty and dry now and again.

So I broke out the pressure test kit.


I connected it up to the feed in the meter head.


This gives system pressure.
It was healthy.


Next up, you switch off the pump and leave it for 30 mins and see what you have.
This was also where it should be.


The next test is control pressure from the WUR. I can't remember how I did this last time but I couldn't find the right fitting to hook up to the wur. I would only be able to test the cold reading as I'm not ready to run the engine yet. This test will have to wait.


I got a kit from Germany and replaced a couple of the more rusty fittings.



Injectors got fitted with some Vasaline as lube.


I put some oil on the cam lobes and fitted a new gasket.


This wobble extension is handy for this job.



All the new stainless nuts were torqued to 10 nm.

Then on to new spark plugs.


Torqued to 30nm


Hopefully will make a start on replacing all the vac pipes tomorrow.

I spent the whole day in the engine bay, changing all the vac pipes and re fitting the bomb. Not much to show for all my work other than a sore back.

Finished the bomb pas pump and all the hoses this morning.




Then onto the new dizzy and ht leads.



Next onto the air filter box.
I was going to remove the fuel lines to give good access but these joins didn't want to budge.


So I cracked on lifting the meter head to give access.






After a good scrub new filter fitted.



Then a couple of pipe left to sort. The breather from the igloo to the intake manifold was cracked and leaking. It's an unusual pipe because it has different diameters at either end. Obviously nla so had to get my thinking head on. I tried heating up a smaller pipe and stretching it but the step was too far. So, bought a fir tree connector in brass with the correct diameter either side and used two hoses of the right diameter.



Coming together slowly.

I know I keep asking the same question but was there much crud in the breather from the igloo to the intake manifold? Do you think the crack/leak was affecting your idle?

No worries. Happy to help.
Most of the crud was at the manifold end. The igloo was quite clean. The breather on top of the rocker cover was very carbon mucky. Any vac leak will effect idle, running and boost. Because the car was running so poorly, likely Im dealing with several issues here.

This morning I re fitted the aux radiator.


Then the main radiator.


The new rubber bobbins I have are a little long.


So I made my own using a stainless bolt, washers and some rubber bushes.


The coolant bottle is as clean as it's going to get. I couldn't find a replacement so it will have to do.


The injector cooling fan and pipes got checked and cleaned.


And I treated myself to a new set of coolant hoses from Germany. They fitted perfectly.

Unfortunately the air guide for the side of the rad didnt pass quality control. I will re make something when I find some suitable material.

The washer bottle was very grubby.



So it got a good scrub.

Just popped to my local hardware shop and got some. I think he was too young to understand the joke.





The top cover is split.



It's getting fixed with some epoxy.
