    Thanks lads.

Steve - I'll be coming up your way soon for a good drive and to buy you lunch. I would have thrown the toys out of the pram long ago and broken the car if you hadn't made the effort to come down and help me with the engine.

I feel like i'm waiting to hear about a relitave in hospital. haha

Left the car in for MOT this morning. Just praying he doesn't phone to say every bush on the car needs replaced or something (since I didn't change the suspension).
I know all about the rest of the car and am fairly confident about most of it. you never know though do you? brake lines, fuel lines, bushes...
Ah well. I'm bloody amazed to even get to this stage.

(Rob - stripped the brake last night and carrier was moving fine. Don't know why the brake pad isn't wearing evenly. Gave the whole thing a good going over with the wire brush and put it back together again.)

just about mate. taxing and insuring today, then have to wait a couple of days and claim a windscreen then put it in for the MOT and pray I don't have a massive amount of work to get it through. I'm confident about most of it, having put it together. If it fails on anything it will be bushes or brakes I reckon. Brakes have definitely improved with nipping up and down to the house but one is rubbing very slightly. Probably a caliper runner sticking. i'll have a look at the weekend.
almost scared to look forward to the MOT now.

that shall be this afternoon's task then. I was sidetracked by a stinker of a cold and courering parts out over the weekend. I can now see the end in sight and damn it I want my coupe road legal!!!!

    cheers

Rear clustser issues could well be corrosion / dodgy joints on the rear cluster boards. I would suggest you take the board out of the rear light and take a look. This is a classic "Disco Lights" fault on the Coupe rear lights.

    Cheers,

    Steve.

well despite having checked twice before I had to take the fault code as a sure sign that something was up and... one of the connections was broken within the shrink wrap. I still need to solder it but a quick tape up and the car starts properly and idles much better. woohoo!

    aha!!!

vagcom didn't want to play and I forgot all about my blink code reader so pulled it out today and there's just one code looping round. 2322- which I believe is Intake Air Temp Sensor (G42). So that's the chap on the top of the IM is that right?

    thanks mate

John - thanks for the explanation. Glad i'm at least working with the right thing, even if I don't know what it's called
I'll need to go over each sensor and check everything. Hopefully Rob can give me a hand with my vagcom and see what it says. might point me at the right sensor at least (if i can then identify it by name. hmm. )
    cheers
    Noel

    oh-oh
Thermostat is a device in the water system which closes to slow down the flow of water when the engine is cold and opens as it warms up. No electrical connections to it, its filled with wax which changes size with temp. It tries to keep the engine at the correct running temperature at all times in conjuction with the fan. It will not be your problem at this point.
The big unit under the water manifold is the MFTS (Multi function temp sender). Connects to the temp warning system, hang onto the spare ones they cost a small fortune.. I think the smaller sensor is the one the ECU looks at or there's another one on the back of the head? Maybe that is disconnected.
It just sounds like your car is not going into cold start mode, so it won't run properly till its warmed up. Has to be a sensor or a wire to one of them.
