I was thinking of this stuff. Probably the same thing only from a motor factors.
The big experiment - amateur 3B shenanigans

Noel tighten the rest of the bolts up so there is less pressure on that bolt to make it easier for that one to come out93 S2 Avant Parting

You need to smack the head of the bolt really hard with a hammer, straight on as if it was a nail and you were banging it in, with luck it'll undo with mole grips then. And I mean, really smack it one (or two). you may find the smacking will shrink the allen key hole to the extent you can hammer the allen key back in.. I cant tell you the number of times I've done this to a seized bolt to the amazement of onlookers

cheers Newsh. I'll tighten up the other bolts a bit as Steve suggested and have a bash at the highly technical art of whalloping it as hard as I can. With a bit of luck I won't take chunks out of myself cos there ain't much room in there. I already gouged my knee on one of the screws left after taking the heat shield off.--------------------------------------------------------------------

Tighten up the others widen the slot and use a impact driver like below and it should come out no bother give it a little heat if you want but you should not need it

yep that freeze stuff is the dogs, since i have used it i haven't been defeated by anything. If you do whack it with a hammer, get something to cover your ears cos it makes a fudookin racket and they'll ring for hours....BTDT.
Thread is a great read and some good pics too....as someone following in your footsteps its a great insight...I'll be swearing and posting some pics too shortly!
Cheers

Raj - fukin good thinking mate. I have one of those in the bottom of my toolbox. If only I knew which way to turn it for 'loosen'.
David - I had a good look last night and decided to get some freeze stuff myself. Glad to be of inspiration to someone. I find myself lying under the car looking at problem bolts and wondering where I lost my sanity. Makes me feel better if I think someone else is prepared to put a silly amount of effort into a car this old.
If anybody else wants some look here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...1533&rd=1&rd=1--------------------------------------------------------------------

just turn it anti clockwise as you hit it should crack it off then it should be finger tight

In theory its a great idea.
but in practice I found that with any part that can move 'slightly' it can take the initial power out of the impact driver.
Now a pneumatic one is a different ballgame tho

pneumatic eh? it's going to be an expensive project if i end up buying a compressor to go along with the generator that I already need. maybe I could adapt a shotgun to work with the impact driver. that'd be impressive (if a tad dangerous). explosives really aren't used enough in car mechanics.--------------------------------------------------------------------
