I considered making a gauze basket the fits in tip with a smoke pellet and insert pressure tester as normal.

Alex I'm considering replacing a few bolts under the bonnet. Where did you get yours from? StevenComment

Mostly from ebay actually mate, there are a couple of good seller who normally deliver next day. A Bolt From The Blue and Kays Fasteners. All standard fasteners which are not critical are stainless - where possible I used A2-80 which is higher tensile than normal A2/A4, similar strength to 8.8. You can;t get everything in that grade though.
For proper high tensile stuff I used OEM

New Wahler thermostat, OEM expansion tank and cap.
800 mile old Febi expansion tank was scrap
Faulty thermostat I had fitted was a Behr unit. Got the new parts fitted tonight. Thermostat required some hand contortionism down the side of the AC condensor. Need to bleed the system tomorrow evening then hopefully I can stop throwing money at this car for a bit

Been really enjoying the car for the last 6 weeks, not had a great deal of time to drive it but done around 1200 miles and its running like a dream, except the brakes. They've been crap since I got the car back on the road, really long pedal travel and poor stopping power, requiring a LOT of leg power to stop quickly. I'd bled the crap out of them since I'd made up all new line in the engine bay, so fluid was new & well bled.
So I thought it was due to a film of rust on the discs following a year off the road, but its been getting worse not better. Since it's been 5 years since I paid the brakes any attention probably time for a strip down to see whats up!
Main cause of the long spongy pedal travel: really uneven wear on the rear pads, glazed and some bad taper.

Front pads were evenly worn and no taper but severely glazed:

Rear discs are shot! Fronts are much better but both front and rear are pretty pitted on the inside face - wonder if this is a result of not running splash shields? I recon rear brakes were below 50% efficiency in terms of contact area

I've got most of the parts I need now for my 310x22 rear brake upgrade so I decided not to bother with new discs on the rear. I cleaned the discs up with a P40 discs on a DA sander and fitted a new set of Brembo pads I had kicking around. I'll be using some better performance ones with the new set-up
Front calipers were perfect, all pistons moving free and I was able to push them back into the caliper by hand.
Again I'm keeping the discs for now and got some new pads for now. I bought some new old stock Brembo pads online, only to find that Brembo have just rebranded Textar pads

Oh well at least they were only ÂŁ25! Going to fit some new Brembo discs and DS2500s when I do the rear upgrade.
Pad retaining clips & pins on the Brembos were looking pretty crusty so derusted and zinc plated them. Some ceramic paste and rebuilt looking nice & tidy again.

Pedal is now nice & firm again. Will be out to bed these in tomorrow and then should be able to stop properly again.

looking clean!
I do like them in red. I had some posh kids in Sutton coldfield pointing and laughing at my black calipers making comments along the lines of "he's put Porsche stickers on them"sigpic

Were the rear pads sticking on the carriers?
I think people are going to start posting you parts to get them back, clean shiny and slathered in zinc

Your discs look like mine, 6months sitting outside didn't do them any good, I thought they'd clean up with use, but like yours they're not getting any better. I've got a new set of Pagid discs and pads for the rear, looking for fronts after Christmas.sigpic

Scotty. The answer to your brake dilemma. Drive a few mile up the road to Erdington where they can't read Porsche.
Alex what drop links are they?Comment
-
Lol. I used to live in Erdington. Bad times!
Drop links are OEM TRW composite ones
No obvious issues with the rear brakes, pads and pins were free and calipers were new 6k miles ago. I suspect the pins are a bit worn causing some flex and the taper. As you say Andy I don't think sitting idle has done them any favours, and I guess the pads then got contaminated and glazed with the rust etc.
new discs and pads the proper solution, I didn't fancy doing that twice though, hopefully the new pads will be a reasonable stop gap
