That FP HTA 3582r is a wicked turbo. I donated a couple of FP modified turbos to Jim Green in California to test at 034's facility, and this is a general guideline for what to expect from that upgrade. I also have that turbo on my personal URQ, and it a beast of a turbo to say the least.

Note that this test was only done to report the claim of increase aero of the billet compressor. It was done on 91oct cali gas, and the tunes were identical one to another. We swapped in 5 turbos that day onto a v-band based manifold on the same day. All in all, it made the 35r spool within a couple hundred rpm of the 30r, with the potential to make 600whp. We also tested base 30r and billet 3076r HTA turbos on that same day...

I just posted to get you excited about a killer turbo!!!!! Nice project, and good luck.

Great post, do have the dyno sheet comparison for the HTA 3076r vs GT 3076r also?

Great post about the turbos. Nice to see some back to back testing on a 5 cylinder. I bought the turbo based on the results the evo lot were having with them and they are getting results just like you have there. How much headwork have you done by the way?

Before I start, I really came out of Lurk mode to get this guy excited about that turbo, not to crowd his thread with test data. If he doesnt mind, neither do I, but if somebody does mind, feel free to move the thread, or ask questions on the Motorgeek thread.

The boost profile is outlined on that dyno sheet. I am the first to say that this was not a session to figure out what the turbo's are capable of, but rather what the spool characteristics are. If a guy looks around the net long enough, he can find Evo's making around 600whp on regular 35r turbos, and up to 660whp on the billet upgrade. What is hard to find is back to back data on ANY motor comparing the turbos.
That is why we setup this session. We wanted to see just how they spooled, knowing that the topend of these turbo's has already been readily proven in other applications.

The boost control was very poor, and the tuning was not there. Jim Green had been running a 35r for a couple of years, so he showed up with a map for htat turbo, and that is the one we used. THe 30r and billet 30r turbo's do not show as much difference in spool as the 35r based turbos do. I think this is more due to a lack of ignition advance that 500rpm sooner to help them spool.

But to answer the question quoted, the cams were 7a cams, and the WG is a tial 44mm. Also relevant to note that all the turbos tested were sporting the tial .82AR Stainless housings fitted to an extremely highflow equal 9.5" runner header being used as a prototype for EFIexpress future headers soon to be released.

This dyno shows 4 turbo's compared in one graph. Don't get your eyes crossed!!

To sum up our experience, I am very impressed with the hta turbos. They are as advertised. The 35r billet is wicked. Your eyes are not tricking you, it does spool almost 500rpm sooner than the regular gt3582r. IMO the regular 35r is about as radical of a turbo you would want on a street car on hydro lifters spinning ot 8500. The billet turbo just gives faster spool, and more power on top without ever gasping for air. It acts like a 30r on crack That dyno plot shows that the 30r is within 200 rpm of a regular 30r.

            Start saving my friends!!!

100% stock head on 7a cams. Wagner Intake manifold, EFIexpress pre-release v-band header with 44mm tial gate. Glad people appreciate the test. IT was a lot of work to get hte test together.

just like an airplane wing works, you removing more air from under the car is negating any downforce you are getting

Definatly appreciate the work that you put in to get the test done. Great to see some real comparable results from the same car, same day and same dyno. Very interesting that the head was totally stock, that makes the HTA results even more impressive! I cant wait to see what it will do on a head with a lot of work!

As for the post about the radiator..................real helpful thanks.

huh? im sorry i was wondering why you odecided to use air from under the car to cool the radiator vs using air from the sides or top of the car

so to clarify divided by 10, we get boost in PSI on that graph?

Yes, I am sorry for that misunderstanding. The boost profile is below the power curves, and they need to be divided by 10.

Possibly as you came over as being a little arrogant with your remark " yes you would "

And the turbo test is a very good bit of info !

im sorry in no way did i mean it to be negative, as well as the airflow/dynamics there is potential for a lot of debris to come up from under the car towards the radiator, i was really looking to know if there was a specific reason air was pulled from under the car vs the sides or top

Not touched this for a month as I have been working on a mk1 golf for a mate, thats now done so I am getting back onto it soon. I have picked up a couple of parts in the mean time though. Had a one piece propshaft made which is obviously 320mm shorter. Went for larger diameter tubing to make up for the increased length of the single tube. So hopefully it will be upto the task, to be sure I had a spare done as it would be annoying to go away and have it break with no spare.

The next part of the puzzle was the exhaust manifold. I made up a jig to get the turbo where i wanted it and then sent it to a company called Nortech from Doncaster. Picked the finished item up yesterday and its a work of art! CNC milled head flange, and collector. V-band outlet for the turbo and wastegate. All tig welded by hand.

Just enough clearance when bolted on!

So finally the turbo could be fitted

I also had Nortech make me some oval tubing to keep a bit of ground clearance when running it low. The oval was rolled from a flat sheet then welded down the one seam rather than splitting normal round tube and widening it. So the tube is now just 2.5" deep which means I can gain and inch of ground clearance over the 3.5" round tube. Also picked up a load of other bits to make the exhaust.

So the plan is to crack on with the exhaust and intercooler tubing so it cant be taken over to nortech for welding. That will finish up the underside of the car so it could be brought back onto its wheels to be finished off.
