    The 80 went for a MOT today

    Failed on

    Emissions
    Bulging flexi
    CV boots not secure
    Side indicator not secure
    Fuel filler cap (I dropped the s2 one at a filling station and borrowed the 80 one and forgot to replace the emergency one I put on)
    Power steering banjo leaking

    Advisory on

    Discs rusty
    Handbrake xx% (it holds on a good slope so its fine :roll: )
    Timing belt upper cover missing
    Fuel tank sheild rusty/hanging off

    Anyway one of the guys at the garage used to be a vag tech so he sorted the emissions, they fitted new cv clips and will fit the flexi and sort the power steering banjo and I will drop off side indicators and fuel cap so the 80 should have an MOT on Monday!

    They will also hopefully sort a letter to say the engine conversion is done to MOT standard to keep the DVLA happy.

      The 80 emissions are sorted, as are cv clips, flexi , indicator and fuel cap, the PAS leak if from the X head plug so hopefully that can be sorted with an o ring for the MOT.

      I tickled the aby with a wire wheel to see how far the rust went, cleaned until I found shiny metal;

      Inner and outer arch seperation;

      Sill is solid thankfully;

      Interior trim out for a look from the inside, the rust is round the arch joint, and the obvious big hole

      Coated in kurust for the time being

      De scaled the front discs, cleaned the pad slides and cleaned and greased the calliper guides and the front brakes apply and release properly now. Before the discs were solid once the brakes were applied.

      Statred to de grime the engine bay slightly

          Freed of a pair of 100 2.8q rear calipers with seized handbrake parts for the ABY

          Removed return spring and retaining bolt on the handbrake mechanism

          The arm can then be prised up slightly

          By cleaning the shaft, lubricating it and working it up and down, repeated cleaning and lubrication then pushing it back in and working it back and forth (and then rewinding the piston) the handbrake mechanism is now working and returning itself without the external spring fitted.

          Partially descaled

          Can you get new dust seals for the pistons?

            After a fair few evenings spent in the garage the ABY passed its MOT!

            Drove there and back fine, brakes are a bit noisy but quietening down through use. Stuck wheels with snow tyres on it and my girlfriend can daily it through winter!

            A stock car is quite nice, quite, comfy Car also feels reasonable tight, no drive train play!

            I HATE the stock seats, they are horrible, the driving postion is horrible, the steering wheel feels like its in the wrong place, there is limited space in the footwell with the carpet in. I love me recaros

            I am unsure of the 01E, shifts differently to the 01A (I am also used to a short throw), gears are noticeably shorter, more responsive.

            Anyway now the MOT is done it can get a timing belt. And then the ecu looked at, and then.......

              good work dude. so you going to save the ABY? Looks like a new sill, quarter panel and outer tub will do it. Any more rust on the rest of the car? The 6 spd gearbox is slower to shift, you can't rush it! Should be nice and smooth though?

                  It will be saved for the moment. The sill is ok, it needs a new quarter and tub to repair properly. There is a couple of bubbles under the paint on the other rear quarter, both front wings are rough. It is going to get driven through winter and then decide what to do with it. Fixing it properly is probably not going to happen due to cost/time, however we will see what happens.

                  Having another car on the road means mine can get some down time as the turbo is vomiting copious amounts oil into the intake.

                  The gearbox is much smoother to operate, just need to get used the the gears, and the reverse location

                    Doesn't look bad at all. Will be a handy winter run around especially if it snows this year like it did last year, I know I'll miss mine this winter. Is the 3b having much done over the winter?

                      Hopefully a flying visit in and out the garage, new turbo, sections of intake piping, possibly exhaust manifold, injectors and new software (and investigate the latest rattle, sounds like the nearside ebay droplink has crapped out after 1 year and 9 months) . In theory it should be ok to start on a Saturday night and have it all done for driving to work on Monday, however we all know how that can work out, so having another car takes the pressure off and means my girlfriend has a quattro for winter if they are both running.

                        Nice bodgery Andy, replacing the rear quarters on Coupe's is a right **** there's brazing to deal with where it meets the back panel as documented by Twentybenson.

                          Looking good man. I think this is the ABY that i called about as well. If i can get the 90 on the road soon we should try and get a wee meet in the snow somewhere.

                            How come you never went for it?

                            Sure a meet up sounds good, I can probably bring the ABY through to you sometime if that will help to have side by side.

                              Everything is up and running and driving i just need to sort silly things for MOT, like the brake lights dont seen to work.haha!!

                                The ABY has done a few miles now, it has become my girlfriends daily, and has just completed a 260 mile round trip without any issues, doesn't use any water or oil, overheat, make funny noises or misbehave.

                                I stuck some decent tyres on it for the long run and it drives great. Much more comfortable than the 3b. I also think on the average Scottish road it is possibly faster, much more relaxing to drive quickly, though it doesn't feel as exciting. Brakes are gash having been used to the 996s, it also dives a lot more under braking than the 3b.

                                And I still can't get used to the stock seats/position again, they are awful
