The under tray, aka "sound dampening pan" is important in that it helps to promote airflow to the side mounted intercooler and the oil cooler. In addition the pan/tray keeps road debris out of the engine bay, helping to keep the engine cleaner. I know of a least one case where a timing belt was taken out and the engine killed on a C4 AAN UrS4/S6 because the owner decided he was smarter than the Audi engineers and that he didn't need to run the pan/tray.
They are the same for any C4 100, A6, UrS4 or UrS6. I always run one on my UrS4 and am running a damaged one on my 98 C4 Avant (leading edge damage done by previous owner - a woman who let it drag on the ground (apparently) - probably after an incident with the bumper catching on a parking kerb).
Good thing I am not in your area because we would be fighting over the one at the local breakers.

Still parts collecting...
Thinking of getting some of the bodywork doing and need some opinions:
Do I keep the car original colour Volcano Black or go the whole hog and respray a different colour?
I like (on other cars)
Magello Blue (Is that right a C5 colour)
Dark Orange!
Nogaro Blue
Missano
Maybe some weird flip colour (I know the paint is expensive!)
Any other ideas?
I do like the black, but am a bit nervous about keeping it black if that makes sense.
If you have other ideas or an opinion and pictures to add I would be interested to see/hear!
Cheers

Personally I think volcano black is one of the best original C4 colours. I would go for a full paint tart up in the original colour, will cost you less than a colour change too and you can spend what you save on a new exhaust :-) Don't underestimate what a professional full colour change respray will cost you if you want it done properly.Comment

I do like the thought of going bananas with it, but it might get silly money wise,
My budget is about £3k to get the bodywork sorted...But I have a dark feeling that it would be £5 to £6k for a complete change...ummmAudi S6Comment

Do or Die...
The journey with the S6 is continuing, the car is still at the garage with an unknown problem, but the car is coming to the point that it needs some serious work doing to it.
I have clearance from the wife to spend a fair bit on it to make it respectable and a nice tidy family car again.
The question is do I go the whole hog, abandon it or keep it going until it dies... (Assuming it hasn't already! lol)
Abandon It - This option sees me without car or having to buy a sensible newish car, the wife wont let me go down the road of tarting about with an older car again, collecting parts etc. So it would have to be something like a Skoda Yeti or Passat etc etc
Keep it Going - Do what it needs to get it running again and just use it as car until the wheels fall off - and run the risk of the missus going bananas when I turn up at fancy places in a clapped out car (or breakdown)
Go the whole hog - engine out, maybe an uprated engine in, strip the whole car, respray it, fit all the new goodies I have collected for it and have one very nice S6 which will need just simple maintenance and cleaning once a week.
Costs:
Abandon It - £0 or if I buy another car then it has to be approx. £10k to get a newish diseasal that is smart.
Keep it Going - maybe tops £500 to get it back on the road until the next thing
Go the whole hog - £3k to respray, £3k in mechanical labour, £3k in other parts at least 9k
(Costs are very rough estimates)
Trouble is to go to newer fast Audi estate is going to cost minimum £10k for a car which is potential more unreliable, more costly to fix and is Auto only.
I don't want an Auto but it would have to be an A6 estate as I need/want the room and the C4 is the last manual fast A6...Otherwise it is mainstream Passat, skoda etc
I have a collection of parts in the garage already mainly costmetic, but these could be sold off if I ditch the car:
Spare wheels
Spare Interior - which combined would make an almost new leather interior (Using two very good passengers seats (One on to the drivers) and have a barely used rear seat set
New grills and lights (nearly all now)
Spare wings (4x!)
New valances
New suspension
BOSE system
Lots of dynamat foil and foam (enough to do an estate properly) over £400 worth
Other stuff I forget
etc etc
Not including the S4 non runner I have
Needs some votes or opinions...
PS For those who know me, I have another car which is a modern classic, but I have made up my mind to sell it as I don't use it unless the S6 is bust. It is worth 6-7kAudi S6Comment

) is it worth getting it replaced?
As far as I know, they are still available but they are pricey. About US$ 285.
