    Audi S6 C4

As promised here are some pictures of my car a 1997 S6 (C4)

Bought as a bit of a gamble and a project, always been a bit of an Audi nut having had quite a few quattros of various sorts along the way

The car is a late build, built 6th Dec 1996 and has the black bits and bobs on it.

What with the weather and work, I have barely had a chance to look it over, but I took it to the mechanic who spotted a few little bits to do, but nothing much and it seems to be running very well.

The interior is very nice, with the exterior very dull and with a few minor dings and lots of stone chips around the leading edge.

Today was my first chance to clean it, but then it rained so I literally have only given it a quick wash. Was going to polish it up, but weather too cold and rainy!

I have removed the rear badges.

If anyone knows how I can tell if this car has remote central locking I would be grateful, there is only one key that works in the lock etc.

The build codes state no remote central locking, but I have taken a picture under the rear seats to see if anyone knows what to look for. It beeps when I lock it and has a little 'radar' type button on the pillar to the right of the drivers seat...

The wheels are RS6 wheels, but I hate them and I hopefully have sourced some original 17" wheels, which will match the spare!

It has the lovely old Audi CD changer and even a first aid kit and warning triangle which all look like they have never been used.

The boot area is very clean and tidy and I love the interior, only a very minor bit of work to do.

I hope to get the car pushing 350bhp at some point, but I will do slowly slowly.

I reckon if I get the odd little ding sorted, the front and rear bumpers resprayed and the little bit of rust on the drivers door (Bottom usual area) and the front wing it will be a very tidy car indeed.

Best bit is the other half loves it too!

Always wanted one of these and sold my 2.5TDi A6 C4 quattro a couple of years ago, but love the shape of them and wanted the petrol this time as I dont do much driving.

I will probably remove the roof rails at some point too...

Any ideas or tips gratefully received!

    Cheers

Very nice UrS6 Avant. Can't quite figure the colour. Amethyst?

The central locking controller and pump (IF you have one), is in a foam "box" just beside the battery, closest to you if you open the right rear door and remove the rear seat (Item 17 in the diagram) (unlabeled but in the foreground in the twp photos below the diagram)

As far as I know it is volacno black (?) which is a very dark grey,

Attached (hopefully) is the options sticker...

Audi gave me the full build printout, which has the build date on, car registered 01.01.97

Will scurry back under the rear seats and see what is there! Battery looked new, but dont think there was a cover on the positive terminal...

Looks nice, was it up in aberdeen or somewhere? It will have an 8l0862257a pump on it,same as my s6 and one of my a6s.it is possible to fit a 8l0862257 in its place and use a fob off say an a4 with the flip key on it,bit of faffing around but is doable.I can find all the instructions if you want to give it a go

one thing I would recommend you take a look at is the state of the petrol tank, passenger side close to the diff, under the silver heatshield) is where they always go(especially if its spent a lot of time up north). If it looks rotten then its only a matter of time before it goes(even 1997 ones)mine is a '97 and that went last summer.

You definitely want the cover on your (+) battery post. You also want a battery with a vent tube and have the vent tube exit below the car.

The wheels original to the car were the "S6Plus" 17" Avus, based on the C7U code on the build tag.

Odd. VN027xxx shows as being built in Nov. 1996 (end of Nov. was VN031xxx).

I don't see any locking codes on your build tag. AFAIK, the central locking codes are:

                      4F0 Mechanical Locking System
                      4F1 Central Locking System
4F2 Central Locking System "Keyless Entry" With Radio Remote Control

                          Maybe.

The problem is that sometimes the build sticker doesn't show all the "options" because some of them are built into the blanket code near the top left of the build sticker, e.g. B0N = "Component Parts Set, Complying With Vehicle Type For Great Britain, Various Parts" (which they don't name but implies everything RHD, etc, and maybe central locks for some countries - all the NAmerican UrS-cars got central lock with remotes but there is no 4Fx series code that says that.)

                            Duffel, good buy, well wear.

Worth spending money on as a keeper. The black chrome on the outside, and black "chrome" on the door handles inside and on the clocks is very nice, imo.

The urS6 has a lot of nice small features on the car that are not on my S2s.

Get it chipped, (Prj), if it hasn't been already.

I have an auto saloon. The auto is great, but is a limiting factor if one wants more bhp. On balance, I'd prefer a manual, but it is a lot of work and time, so I'm enjoying what I've got.

Bought a new key from the Dealer and they matched it to the car and the alarm and the central locking work with the new key and the old key. It has two buttons on it. It was expensive, but I thought it was worth it, as I wanted a second key anyway.

Nice to have a new key to use and handle, even if the car is 1996.

The key is bigger than an S2 one with the light, but smalller than than a newer flip keys.

More information than you need, but hope it helps.

                              Hi

Interesting, the printout I have from Audi has 'date of production' as 5th December 1996 so that may be different to the build date?

The printout from Audi is four pages long and apparently the crucial bit for the remote central locking is:

                              5D1 - With Carrier Frequency

                              Mine has:

                              5D0 - Without Carrier Frequency...

Need to double check under seat, we had snow here yesterday so didn't get to look in the end!

Thanks for all the other comments,

Will be checking out remote fitting and looking at the fuel tank issue. I did confirm that the fuel tank guard is in place but that probably makes corrosion issues worse!
