    Refurbing Audi RS2

Hi and welcome to Audi RS2 ownership, I have owned mine since last September/October and will also be going through mine later this year, I am just in the process of getting the parts together (what joy).

    Getting back to your list,

No: 6 rear wiper fault, my car has the same fault at the moment wiper will not park correctly and the will just stop randomly on the rear window, I have found the problem to be a broken wire in the wiring loom from tailgate to car (n/s wiring loom) I think it is the blue wire I got an auto -electrician out and he put power down the faulty wire and it work as it should.

No:22 Missing/broken stalk which stalk is it there is the bigger one for the indicator and main beam and the smaller one for the lights, I have a spare on if you need it just PM me.

The RS2 from New Zealand you were going to look at was the same one I was planning on going to have a look at, the seller Gary told me that a guy from London had booked his train and hotel and was making a weekend of it with his girlfriend/wife, I spoke to him on the Saturday afternoon to see if the person looking at it had bought it and he told me that you bought it.

Oh really?! He told me he'd sold it to someone else AFTER I booked the tickets. I was absolutely furious that he hadn't indicated the risk before I'd committed. It looked like a cracking motor and I'd wasted three hundred quid without even a test drive. Sounds like he was playing games with people.

Thanks for the tips about the wire. It stands to reason that some wiring might start falling apart I guess on a car of this age. There was a similar issue with the abs sensor where someone had spliced in a replacement and the connection had broken.

Johnboy where are you sourcing your parts from and what parts are you looking for? If I spot anything I think will be of use I'll let you know.

What a PITA. At least you managed to buy it in the end....
I know a similar story that involved tickets bought, with a flight to Scotland booked.

As you were, back on topic. Sounds like you got a good plan to sort things out.
Although I haven't used him before, Ive heard nowt but good things about Dean through the TTF.

            Refurbing RS2

I have ordered some of the front suspension parts from TPS, just ordered an Intercooler and manifold from Wagner, hoping to order exhaust manifold from group buy on here.

The car I bought is in pretty good condition considering it is 21 years old, I think someone previously has had a go at taking the interior apart and there are a few squeaks here and there, but I am hopefully going to strip the car later this year or early next year and sort all the noises out when rebuilding.

I just keep my out on Ebay Germany and Ebay Switzerland.

If you have any parts supplier you want to share as I think we are both doing the same thing at nearly the same time.

Also if any one can recommend a v.good Brembo refurbisher.

There's a guy on Ebay, only9nine, who has been selling RS2 parts (ABS pump, driveshafts etc), he might be worth contacting. He's got some 964 front calipers for sale at the moment for £295.

Re: the wiper stalk. I have the indicator and headlight stalk both present and working fine. But there is an additional hole in the steering column cowling in front of the headlight stalk which...so far...I've assumed had a stalk control for hi fi given that cruise control is normally integrated into the indicator stalk.

I'll take a picture of it and perhaps some of the other work that needs doing over the weekend. If the weather is OK, I'll have a look at the suspension strut under the front offside wheel and see if I can see any evidence of bending too.

Only just enough for the MOT though! Did anyone actually get to the bottom of why RS2's have weak handbrakes...?

It's interesting to see a lot of enthusiasm for RS2s this year! A lot of resource is required with less specialists prepared to deal with the older cars and parts are becoming an issue. I've had mine 4 years now and it's sadly spent the past 6 months rotting on the driveway, this is good motivation.

The handbrake mechanism tends to get stiff and needs attention regularly. Both tightening, for which there is a procedure which requires real wheel removal, and replace or grease up the spring mechanism on the shoes.

Calipers can be revived by GT500 (rob) on here, busy guy but the ones I've seen him do look like new.

I'm banking on RS2 cars slowly going up in value and topping out at about £25-29,000 for average mileage, much like lancia delta evolutions. They have almost universally positive reviews of inspite of their quirks and a cult status which always ensures strong demand. I'd traded bass guitars profitably over the previous ten years before to pay for the RS2 and looked for instruments with the same criteria - cult following, limited edition, established manufacturer and undervalued by the general market.

                      Some pics

                      The business bit.

                      Missing bit of trim

Alcantara has detached as a result of the foam core rotting.

Rear offside door - are the speakers after market?

This is the underside of the car beneath the drivers wheel where I was expecting to find some damage - not much is showing from this perspective.

This air inlet is a bit rusty and wasn't on the list - is it easy to find or one of those rare things?

The wonky wheel - unfortunately the lighting doesn't really show where the front edge of the tyre sits.

This is the third hole I mentioned in the steering column cowling - can ya tell wot it is yet?

Jammed windscreen wiper jet. I discovered the arm wasn't making contact with the glass because it had been crushed out of shape slightly. I've bent it back into shape now but it boggles the mind what kind of care the car had for two owners to let that one slide.

I had a flat battery today as a result of leaving the windscreen wipers on after I turned the ignition off last week. Some current definitely earthing with the wiper wiring. Thank goodness for speed chargers, I had the car up and running in 15 minutes.

                            Refurbing Audi RS2

Seems you have the same accelerator pedal as me I think that needs to be No:25 Ha!

I have no idea what the extra hole is for mine is not like that I think it has been added, I agree with you about these cars and there previous owners what were they thinking.

The rear door speaker do look after market compared to mine, but hey who says mine are right.

Your car look in v.good condition generally, we can all pick faults with our cars.

It looks like a nice one, definitely the best colour

I've had my RS2 for 3 and a half years. When I recently had the service done at MRC, I asked Doug what he thought my RS2 was worth, more from an insurance value point of view than a selling point of view. He went on to say that in its current condition, if I was to sell it I could ask what I liked for it and it'd sell. Not massively helpful for numbers for the agreed value insurance. He said it needed insuring for at least £35k. He's right though really, I have a spread sheet and know exactly what it has cost me. God help me if the worst happened and I had to replace it. I'd have to find the best car I could and start my build thread again. I think the milage has become secondary to everything else. They're all 20 years old now, so even if the milage is low, it'll still need all the same jobs doing as I've just been through. I'm not shy on spending money on my cars, but believe me, it's flipping expensive!

This part is notoriously hard to get, plus you should have a plastic duct from the bumper that connects to this. It fills up with crud, salt water and leafs all it's life and rots out. It's been NLA for quite some time, but I'm guessing everyone with an RS2 needs one these days. I've been thinking about putting some pressure on to Audi Tradition for parts like this and also the heat shield above the exhaust. We're going to need to work together to keep these cars on the road.
